007: Would it just be easier to give up?
It's so easy to give up, and it's so hard to keep going. How do you know which one to do? That’s what we’re diving into in today’s show.
Episode transcript:
Hello Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So every so often someone shares something in an email that just makes me sit up and think and puts words to something that I've been feeling for a while. This week I received an email from Caroline Pick, who not only inspired this episode, but has the best Instagram handle ickillily in her email and I've checked she's okay with me sharing this. She says it's hard not to put too much pressure on yourself, and it's easy to think about giving up or just hiding. And I couldn't agree more because it is just so easy to talk yourself out of things. To believe that there isn't space in the world for you to give up and pretend that it wasn't even important to you in the first place. To take the voice of your inner dreamshitter as a sign to give up. To feel you should just suck it up and go with the status quo.
To get lost in procrastination because it's less scary to make excuses for why you shouldn't start or that you just need to do more research. It's easy to believe that you don't matter and to not even try. It is so hard not to get overwhelmed by the sheer weight of your own expectations that you just can't anymore. It's so hard not to feel other people's judgments. It's hard not to give up when something doesn't turn out the way you imagined. To carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. To not feel swayed by other people's ideas of what you should be doing. To ignore your inner dream shitter and buy into everything they say.
To create without judging as you go. To not buy into the lie that there's something wrong with you because you want a different path from the people around you. It's hard to deal with the loneliness that can often come with doing your thing. And it can be really hard to remember why you even started in the first place when you don't feel like you're making or you can see any progress. But here is the truth. It would be much, much harder to live with the consequences of not doing the thing. Now, I don't buy into the stoic ideology that everything needs to be hard. Quite the opposite.
I found that things you are born to do are often the things that you can get lost in the flow of doing, and they don't feel like hard work at all. In fact, they feel fun and quite easy. But the reality is that it does take hard work to keep going in spite of internal and external pressures. I'm sure you know by now building a life you love requires a pretty uncomfortable dance with fear and uncertainty. But I know for me, I would rather do an uncomfortable chicken dance than rob myself of the opportunity of doing the work that lights me up and living by my values, even though I don't know where it's going to lead. I mean, of course it would be easier to walk away. And not only would it be easier, but it would be safer. But would it really be walking away if you gave up or went into hiding? Although it would be more comfortable in the short term, I think there's a huge chance that there would be a voice in the back of your head almost haunting you, wondering about the path not traveled.
You would always wonder, what if? Yes, by giving up and hiding, you might save yourself potential heartbreak and disappointment. But ultimately, could you live not knowing? That is the question of today's daily pep. Get quiet and just see what your gut says. I've got a feeling you might just find that you you are more stubborn, more rebellious, and more courageous than you.
