006: Stop looking for signs

Reading into everything is dangerous. And not only because in doing so we’re able to let ourselves off the hook for things we really want to do.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. Happy Wednesday and welcome to another episode of the Daily Pep, the only podcast, the only Rebel Rousing podcast for creative and multipassionate women. And today's episode is definitely putting the sass into the podcast. So I want to start today's episode with a question. Have you ever stopped to think what would happen if you read everything as a sign or as a marker of fate? One of the things that irks me the most about the self help industry, apart from the law of attraction, but I fear that could be a two hour episode in and of itself, is the notion of reading everything as a sign. I mean, let's just look at how that plays out. Just by taking this morning as an example, you may be able to tell I have woken up pretty fired up. So today I left my towel in the downstairs bathroom.

Is that a sign I shouldn't have showered this morning? Merlin didn't want his breakfast. Is that a sign I should just stop feeding him? My earphones didn't connect automatically on my walk this morning. Is that a sign to stop listening to podcasts? And it was pouring down this morning. Is that a sign to not leave the house and go back to bed? I could totally buy into that one. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point already. Reading into everything is dangerous, and not only because in doing so, we're able to let ourselves off the hook for things we really want to do. The reality is, if you struggle with anxiety, like a lot of us do, reading everything as a sign is only contributing to a belief system that already has us overthinking and over analysing our every move. And if you're a creative person, reading everything as a sign can stop you from making your very best work.

Feeling uncertain and unsure is part of the creative life. And if you take that as a sign, you need to stop, turn around, or go down another path, well, it's not going to be a very long lived creative life. Now, I know I've said this before, but it remains true. If you're looking for evidence that you're shit or that you should quit, then you're going to find it. In fact, you're going to find many signs because our brain already has a negative bias and it will more than rise to the challenge. So I say, fuck the signs, stop searching for them. And I say this in the most compassionate way possible to myself as well as you just get on with it. I know it sounds harsh, but I think it might be just exactly what you need to hear today.

And it could be the kindest gift you could give yourself. So have a fabulous day, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow. I can't promise it's going to be any less sassy, though. I hope your day is as fabulous as you are. See you then.
