1126: Non-scary accountability
Accountability, as scary as it might sound, can be invaluable in getting sh*t done. Today I share a little about my experience with it, and how it can be useful for you too!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So before we kick off and dive into today's episode. I wanted to quickly remind you that the 1 woman band open day is happening today. So if you wanna come, hang out, get unstuck, get some shit done with some fabulous company, and have a good laugh along the way, I would love to see you for the open day. It's run as a drop in. You're more than welcome to attend as much or as little as you'd like to. You can find out more by going to therebelrousers.com/openday, and I'll take you through the schedule really quick.
The following times are based on the UK time zone. So if you are outside of the UK, I recommend nipping over to a time zone converter to figure out what it would be for you. So we are starting with a kickoff Huddle where we are setting our intentions and learning to plan our weeks live in action, rebel style, between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. We have coworking between 2 PM and 5 PM, where we're really gonna get some shit done together and work in dedicated time chunks to really knock some things off our list, make some serious progress, and get our heads down even if it is getting our heads down on actually doing something nice or creative for ourselves for once. Then between 6:30 and 8:30 PM, we are having a group q and a coaching call where you can come along and pick my brain on anything and or do some live coaching. And we'll all really get our heads together on whatever you're stuck on, want feedback on, or what you wanna dive into. The open day is all about giving you a chance to come and experience the magic of 1 woman band for yourself. And what I always say is come along even if you have no intention of joining, and you just wanna get some shit done.
I am not gonna be selling to you. I'm not gonna be pitching to you. If all you get from it is a load of shit done and meet some cool new people, then I am one happy motherfucker. You can register and get the zoom link by going to therebelrousers.comforward/openday and I would truly love to see you there. So one of the things I talk a lot about is co working and the idea of external accountability and doing things in short time chunks. Now one of the things I've seen time and time again is that you get together a group of people and you give them 45 minutes to work on something, and everybody is amazed at what they get done. I think for so many of us, we believe that if we wanna make progress and we have to have a whole afternoon, and often when we do have that whole afternoon, it is really easy to do anything but the thing that we, quote, should be doing or want to be doing. I know when I first discovered coworking, I was skeptical, and it just sounded weird.
Like, getting together in a room of essentially strangers or getting together with 1 stranger, both telling each other what you're working on and going to do it. It just felt really odd, but the first time I experienced it, I just I just got it, and it's changed so much for me. I am somebody who left my own devices. I will always wiggle out of doing things. Avoidance tends to be my go to, and I always convince myself it is gonna be so much harder than it actually is, and I simply couldn't possibly have the time. Now while those things are sometimes true, they're not always true. And a lot of the time, I think we can really surprise ourselves. I found that doing things like coworking and working with a timer really, really helps those of us who rebel against traditional structures, who maybe have a neurospicy brain, and it also gives you a real win.
Now accountability can sound really scary. It can sound like a drill sergeant who is gonna shout at you if you don't get it done. But another of my biggest biggest lessons that I've learned running 1 woman band club for 4 years now is that you get so much more shit done with self compassion rather than beating yourself up. It is so counterintuitive. It sounds pretty illogical, but it is so true. And I know I have helped so many women get so much shit done by having a really good laugh, by going off topic at times, and really breaking things down than I ever could have if I was a drill sergeant, which let's face it, that just isn't me. To absolutely butcher something Brene Brown said, change does not happen from a place of shame. Shaming ourselves into doing something never works, so we might as well take a different approach.
So even if you find the idea of accountability scary, try getting an accountability buddy. Try some coworking. And if you wanna do that today and just say fuck it, I'm just gonna give it a try and see what it's like, I'd love to see you at the open day. We truly get so much shit done, but we also have a really good laugh, and it is just really lovely. You can register for free by using the link in the show notes or go into therebelrousers.com/openday. And here's to getting shit done today, with a shitload of compassion, some joy, and trying a different tactic. I'll see you tomorrow or maybe later today.
