1127: Flexible structure for rebels

Although we often rebel against structure, (even if we set it ourselves) if we can find the right amount of flexibility - we can thrive!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Wednesday to you. This week, I've opened the doors to the next round of my fabulous group coaching program, One Woman Band Club. And I am sharing the most helpful things that I've found since running One Woman Band for 4 years now. All about showing up for yourself, getting shit done and getting out of your own way. If you've been thinking of joining, I want to remind you that the early bird bonus ends on Friday. So if you sign up before or on Friday, alongside the 100 day program, you also get a 60 minute 1 to 1 coaching session with me. We can cover a lot of shit in 1 hour.

We can seriously work some magic. So if you've been thinking of joining anyway, I really recommend joining by Friday to take advantage of the early bird offer. You can find out more by going to the rebel riser.com forward slash one woman band, where you can find out how exactly the program works, what other fabulous people have said about partaking in it, and also reserve your spot. So for today's episode, I wanna dive into something that you might have heard me talk about here on the daily pet before, and it is how much I fucking love a container. So around here, we tend to be pretty rebellious, and we tend to resist structure, and I am with you. But if we can get the balance right and I don't really love the word balance, but we're just gonna use it for a second. If we can get the balance right between flexibility and structure, we can truly fucking thrive. Now I am someone that can spend and loves to spend all the hours doing all the planning with my colored pen, with my highlighters, making it pretty.

And then I look at the plan, and I rebel against it even though it is a self imposed plan, and I've created it myself. And I know I am not alone in this. But something really started to change for me when I just started implementing containers. So, for example, one of my containers is life bingo. So rather than time blocking when you're gonna work on what you wanna work on this week, You create your own bingo card of the things that you want or need to do, and you give yourself permission to do them at any point that you want to do. One of the things that I hate the most about this whole toxic productivity hustle culture is it takes the emotion out of it and just assumes that we can just get shit done whenever we want to. And then when we can't, we beat ourselves up. But there is so much more to it than just doing the thing.

It's how we feel about doing the thing, the baggage that is attached, the resistance that comes with it, and all of the emotions. Now for me, something like life bingo is really helpful because I've got the container, I know where I'm aiming for, but I've also got the freedom to figure out how to get there myself. I can decide on the task based on what I feel like doing. I can also bring my energy levels into account, and it stops me from wanting to rebel so much. And that's also why I think having a 100 day container really works because a year is too long. We forget our goals, and we just spend half of the year beating ourselves up. But a 100 days is long enough to make some serious progress, but it's also short enough that it feels doable and there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The same way as for 1 woman band, we have regular things to show up for with people you are familiar with who are really cheering you on, and that can just help so much.

Because if you're not feeling something or something's feeling hard, you can think, okay. I've got coworking on these days. I'm gonna put that off until then. I'm gonna do it then. And you can create some space rather than just beating yourself up until then because you've got a plan. And containers are also really helpful for building muscles that we desperately need but struggle to make the time for. So for example, on Fridays, we toot our own horns, we review our weeks, and we find the things to be proud of. And it makes all the difference having a container there where we actually do that work and we actually acknowledge our wins.

And believe me, it makes our weeks feel so much more satisfying. So if you are a rebel like many of us around here, if you love freedom but you resist structure, I really recommend trying to think about things in terms of containers. And they can be really fun too. I've shared here before on the daily pep how I love the song Bohemian Rhapsody because it is truly amazing how much you can tidy up during the period of that song. And I also love my 45 minute fuck it sessions where I set myself a period of time to do all the things that I really can't be fucked to do. And that particularly helps me because I know when I'm thinking of all the things I should be doing or I have to do. I've got that container set aside. It's gonna get done, and it helps me to give myself a bit more of a break.

So here's to thriving in containers, here's to holding on to our freedom, and here's to doing things our own damn way. And finally, because I can't seem to stop talking, I really, really do love containers, here's to knowing that just because you're doing something in a different way to other people, that doesn't mean that you're doing something wrong. It means that you've found your own ways, and that is a strength, not a weakness. Have a beautiful day, and I'll see you tomorrow.
