1345: Adjust your sails

We're kicking off this week with some good old Dolly Parton wisdom!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So it will come as a surprise to precisely nobody that I'm a huge Dolly Parton fan. So to kick off this week on the Daley Peppers, I thought I would share one of my favorite quotes of hers as some inspiration to kick off this week and also to get you thinking. So one of my favorite quotes of hers is, we cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails. And one of the reasons I love it so much is because it's really bullshit free. I get so sick of the platitudes that just gloss over the fact that sometimes life can be really tough, cruel, and ugly, and all that toxic toxic positivity shit that would have us believe that if we just think positive thoughts, only good shit will happen. So going back to the quote, I think it gives us something really practical to do. We can figure out which sales are in our control, and we can experiment with turning them different ways.

It's not about doing it perfectly. There's also some acknowledgment that it's not just a one and done, and there are two really liberating things in there. Firstly, it gives us back a bit of autonomy in reminding us that there are things that we do have control over. And the second one, like I was just saying, it reminds us that we do have options. We're not stuck to one way of doing things, and we can adjust as we go. I was thinking before I press record about how sailing literally wouldn't work if you couldn't adjust the sails and you couldn't adjust to the wind and you couldn't adjust to the weather. If you had a sailor set sail and that was their strategy, well, it'd be pretty fucking ridiculous. Yet how often do we do that for ourselves? We set off in one direction, and we convince ourselves that if it doesn't work, then we somehow failed.

We don't see that flexibility and adaptability can actually be a superpower. We just blame ourselves for being flaky and for changing our minds. And if you need a huge permission slip about that, go back to episode 538 where I dive into just that. So as we kick off this week, I invite you to think about your own wind and weather this week and how you can adjust your sales accordingly. If you've got a bit of a shitty week, what are your sales and how can you adjust them even a tiny bit? So that is some food for thought to kick off this week. And I might just keep this week on the daily pep. Sea or boat themed? We will see. Plan not intended, but actually very good. I'll see you tomorrow.
