Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for the next two weeks, I'm recording the Daily Pep from a cosy cottage in Cornwall. And what comes with a cosy cottage around a lot of country roads? All the bugs. So, during recording yesterday, out of the corner of my eyes, I saw a massive spider legging it down the stairs like a fucking athlete. I pointed it out to Mr. Meg, who is less of a fan of spiders than me, and he simply replied, oh, it's just Bob. See, in our house we have this rule that whenever we see a bug we don't like or that scares us, which is pretty much all of them, we immediately name it. And we also tend to try and give it a backstory.

We found this is the best way of getting out from underneath the fear, so that rather than being this scary spider, he simply becomes Bob the Spider, who's on a bit of a mission to go find his long lost cousin. Now, the reason I'm sharing this today is because I think there's something here we can take to our bigger fears as well. For example, if we name our inner dreamshitter, it becomes a whole lot easier to deal with. And if we can name our fears or identify them in the moment and be able to say, yep, that's my inner dream shitter thought it would turn up, then it can make it a whole lot easier to deal with. And that is the whole point in this. It's just about making them more manageable because we cannot necessarily eradicate our fears. And I think if we make our end goal to become fearless, then we've set ourselves a pretty high bar. And I'm not sure that is entirely possible, because a lot of our fears are there simply to keep us safe, even though sometimes they can feel far from helpful.

If we can start to name our fears, we can see them more as a side note rather than the main prologue. And while the fears will still be there, maybe we'll be able to expect them, maybe we'll be less distracted by them, and maybe we'll be able to take action quicker. So here's to naming spiders, here's to naming your fears, and here's to having a little bit of fun along the way. Happy hump day and I'll see you tomorrow.
