1647: A ship in the harbour is safe, but…

Is that where she’s meant to be?

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is halfway through the week and I am popping in with a reminder that whenever you are trying something new out, whether it is starting something new for the first time, whether it is putting something into practice like setting boundaries. Or it is simply trying something on for size or experimenting, it is normal for things to feel shaky and wobbly. That is definitely part of the process, but so much of the stuff we see out there makes everything look so much easier and simpler than it is, and when we quite naturally come across hurdles, or it's a bit bumpier or wobblier than we thought, we immediately think that we're doing something wrong, that we haven't got the knack for something, And it is all too easy to give up, especially as we all have a very, very cruel inner dream shitter that is often rooting for us to fail and give up, because that is its job, to keep us safe. There was a choir that I used to be a part of, and we would sing this song based on a really well-known quote, and it just feels really pertinent to share that today, and it is this: A ship in the harbour is safe and still, but that is not where it's meant to be, for she is made of timber strong to sail in the open sea. So that is something I really want you to take with you into today. While I certainly don't believe that life begins at the edge of your comfort zone, because I do believe that comfort is important, we cannot always stay in the harbour. And when we do leave the harbour, It is okay if the sea is a bit choppy because that is how it is supposed to be. Your wobbles, your unsteadiness, your mistakes— what if they are simply a sign of sailing rather than a sign of failing? And there we have it, we had a bit of a rhyme we didn't know was going to happen today.

Whatever new thing you're doing or thinking of doing or testing out, Don't write yourself off too quickly, and remember that your future self really is rooting for you. Happy Hump Day, and I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow, or in your inbox a bit later today if you are part of my email community, where every Wednesday I send out a really fun eclectic roundup called Wildcard Wednesday of things that I've found that I'm really enjoying, that are really helping me, and and things that might really help you build a life you love. And if you don't already get them and you want to, sign up to therebelrousers.com/letters. It is, of course, free, and I can't wait to share this week's with you. Have a good one, and remember, as always, that everything changes when you believe you matter.
