744: Get it in the diary!
Got loads of books you keep meaning to read? Or courses you bought and never returned to? Today I have some homework for you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. Now, around here we tend to be bookworms. We love learning, we tend to buy a lot of courses or we have a lot on our watch later pile. And I know for me, just by buying the book, I feel like I've taken concrete action towards something and it's not always the case. This episode is a hundred percent sponsored by all of the books on my bookcase that I haven't read that I know will make a big difference. And I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this. So to wrap up this week on the Daily Prep, I really encourage you to find the one thing that you think that might make the biggest difference. So whether it is a book or a course or a video you've got saved for later or a podcast episode and literally scheduling time to go do the thing, it is so easy for time to get away from us and it is so easy to look towards the next thing thinking that will be the thing that fixes everything.
But A we know that isn't true and B you've got a load of helpful already. So your homework, if you like, for this weekend is to schedule some time in whether it's this weekend or not, it doesn't matter to make a start, it doesn't matter how much you do, but see if you can find some time to dedicate to it and know that in doing that you're honoring your own needs and doing something for future you, which is pretty damn good. And if you've got a load of stuff you want to do and you're not sure where to start, maybe make a short list. And rather than initially trying to pick one thing, try and figure out what the pattern is or what the theme is. Because upon putting all the books together or whatever it is, upon compiling them, a theme might just emerge and give you a clearer indication of what you really need right now and what would be really helpful for you. So go for a time in your calendar. I am doing this right alongside you. Let's take away any shame or judgment from the fact that you haven't done it or you haven't read it already and embrace the fact that we are multi, passionate, curious people, we are always learning, and sometimes we just need a helpful nudge to go dive into the things that we've already got.
So happy exploring. I hope you find many fabulous rabbit holes and I can't wait to be back with you on Monday morning in your ears for another week of the Daily Pep or in your inbox on Sunday for my Letters of Rebellion, and you can find out more about them by going to therebelrousers.com/letters either way, I shall see you soon and have a fabulous weekend.

742: What if you're not lazy but strategic?
Around here, we tend to give ourselves a hard time about how much we do do and how much we don't do. Today we're shaking it up!
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day, it is middle of the week and whether you're feeling it or you're feeling shit today I have a reminder that I think we all really need to hear. So we left off yesterday's episode talking about this idea of how can you make it easier for yourself and it is one of my favorite questions to ask. But I think so much resistance comes up from that because we are fed so much bollocks about what it means for something to be easy.
We've all grown up with different variations of if it's not hard, it doesn't count as work. You've got to see the blood, sweat and tears and things that are worth doing are an uphill battle. Now, I am not for 1 minute suggesting that life is easy, nor am I ever going to suggest that. But I think one thing that could make our lives easier is if we could reframe this idea of what hard work looks like. I think around here one of our biggest fears and one of the biggest things that our dream sure to feed us is this idea that we're lazy. And through the fact that you are listening to this podcast which is all about personal development, building a life you love and we are not shy here around the fact that it is not just all rainbow dust, we can deduce from that that you are not lazy. You work hard, you are conscientious and you put your heart and soul into an awful lot of things that you do.
And sometimes this idea of taking a shortcut or doing something easier can really rub up against that voice in our head. And it's like we feel like we have to make it really really hard for it to count. But here's the thing. There is something super strategic about choosing a shortcut. We all have limited time and energy and if we can do something that is going to make it quicker or it's going to make it easier or a bit more joyful for ourselves, then how on earth is that cheating? So putting this idea of you being lazy aside for a second, what is one way that you can make your life easier? What is one thing that you could do that would mean less effort on your part but the same results, if not better? And a bigger question which might be worth gentling around is what changes would you make in your life? Or what would you do differently if you didn't believe you were lazy?
There are so many tools at our disposal, especially with the internet, where we don't have to learn Excel in extreme depth and we can go on Etsy and buy a template or we can go and download one for free. We don't have to reinvent the wheel every single time. And I'm of the belief that if possible, we should aim to get to the point where we spend our best energy and time on the things that only we can do. So as you go about your day to day, I just want you to think about what is one thing you can make easier? And what different choices would you make if you weren't worried about being lazy? That's my food with thought for you today. And in case you need the reminder, you, my dear, you really, really, really aren't lazy. You do a fuck turn whether you recognize it or not. I'll see you tomorrow.

726: You're not behind (honestly)
Comparison is definitely the thief of joy, and today I'm here to remind you that you really aren't behind.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So for today's Daily Pep, I just really want to remind you that you are not behind. And I mean that seriously. It is so easy to look at, at the people we have around us, our loved ones, people we knew from school, who we haven't actually spoken to for the past 15 years, people we know on the Internet, people everywhere, and come to the conclusion that somehow we are behind or we are somehow missing that coveted manual called How To Do Life. I just want to tell you that there is no such manual. I know. We know that and you're not missing it. The truth of the matter is that we are all walking very different paths and none of us have walked this path before.
And they are all going to look wildly different. As much as we might know about the people we're comparing ourselves to, chances are we don't have the full picture. And chances are it's not as glamorous as it seems. It definitely feels to me like the people who most seem like they've got their shit together are the ones that spend the most time trying to make it appear so. And it's not always the case. Behind closed doors around here, we are definitely about carving our own path and living life on our own terms. And while that can be really exciting sometimes, it does mean that we don't get to have the milestones that other people have. And that's okay.
But what it does mean is that we get to set our own standards, we get to find our own milestones and we get to make them the things that really matter to us and align with our values instead of some kind of tick off the list thing just because you're supposed to do it. And I know around here we are not about what we are supposed to do. It is so easy to compare ourselves to where we are now versus where we thought we might be. But the reality is we cannot predict the unexpected shit that comes up and. And also past us isn't always the best at predicting how the future is going to turn out. And that's not a failure on your part. That is just something we can't do as humans. And if you took some time to reflect on just how much you did last year, including the unexpected shit and the times you got out of bed when you really didn't think you could, I think you'd be pretty damn proud.
So here's to knowing that you are not behind. Here's to remembering that what you see online doesn't tell the full story. And here's to acknowledging all the ways in which you've persevered, all the tough shit that you've got through. And here's to knowing you've got your own back, because you really do. So have a good one. Other people's standards and set your own. I'll see you tomorrow.
