726: You're not behind (honestly)
Comparison is definitely the thief of joy, and today I'm here to remind you that you really aren't behind.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So for today's Daily Pep, I just really want to remind you that you are not behind. And I mean that seriously. It is so easy to look at, at the people we have around us, our loved ones, people we knew from school, who we haven't actually spoken to for the past 15 years, people we know on the Internet, people everywhere, and come to the conclusion that somehow we are behind or we are somehow missing that coveted manual called How To Do Life. I just want to tell you that there is no such manual. I know. We know that and you're not missing it. The truth of the matter is that we are all walking very different paths and none of us have walked this path before.
And they are all going to look wildly different. As much as we might know about the people we're comparing ourselves to, chances are we don't have the full picture. And chances are it's not as glamorous as it seems. It definitely feels to me like the people who most seem like they've got their shit together are the ones that spend the most time trying to make it appear so. And it's not always the case. Behind closed doors around here, we are definitely about carving our own path and living life on our own terms. And while that can be really exciting sometimes, it does mean that we don't get to have the milestones that other people have. And that's okay.
But what it does mean is that we get to set our own standards, we get to find our own milestones and we get to make them the things that really matter to us and align with our values instead of some kind of tick off the list thing just because you're supposed to do it. And I know around here we are not about what we are supposed to do. It is so easy to compare ourselves to where we are now versus where we thought we might be. But the reality is we cannot predict the unexpected shit that comes up and. And also past us isn't always the best at predicting how the future is going to turn out. And that's not a failure on your part. That is just something we can't do as humans. And if you took some time to reflect on just how much you did last year, including the unexpected shit and the times you got out of bed when you really didn't think you could, I think you'd be pretty damn proud.
So here's to knowing that you are not behind. Here's to remembering that what you see online doesn't tell the full story. And here's to acknowledging all the ways in which you've persevered, all the tough shit that you've got through. And here's to knowing you've got your own back, because you really do. So have a good one. Other people's standards and set your own. I'll see you tomorrow.
