052: You can't live completely outside your comfort zone
We've all been told that the magic happens outside your comfort zone, but today we're diving into the things you actually need in order to chase your dreams.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and welcome to the daily pack. Your daily dose of Rebel Rising, encouragement, and motivation to get creatively unstuck, and to create the life you love. So if you've been around the personal development world for even five minutes, you are also probably sick of this idea of living life outside your comfort zone. It's something that I think we can all relate to and can be really helpful at times, but other times, we kind of wish it would just fuck off. So today, I wanna defend a bit the comfort side of the comfort zone through a metaphor. And if you've been around here even a little while, you'll know I love a metaphor. A couple of years ago, I read Wild by Cheryl Strayed, And I think we've all read those books about epic journeys and personal discovery. Now that is clearly about living outside of your comfort zone.
If we took living outside your comfort zone to its natural conclusion, well, you wouldn't say, fuck it. I'm not bringing a pillow. I'm not bringing a tent, and I'm not bringing a sleeping bag because I've gotta go all in in this experience, and I wanna live so far outside my comfort zone. I don't even recognize what it is. Of course, you wouldn't do that. That would be ridiculous. But that's part of the problem with this advice of living outside your comfort zone. It's this idea that you've gotta go all in and leave every single semblance of comfort behind.
But the reality is you have to have some comfort in order to do anything outside your comfort zone. Otherwise, it would just be unbearable, unsustainable, and you simply wouldn't do it. You couldn't do it. So today, I just wanna roll against this idea of living completely outside your comfort zone. And just to remind you that if you've got things in your life that make you feel comfortable and make you feel safe, they are not in any way holding back your personal development or your growth. If you want to sustainably live a life where you push yourself and where you grow, you are gonna need that base to come back to. All or nothing thinking can be so dangerous because there are already so many valid reasons to not do something that scares you or not give something a try. So take that out of the equation.
You do not need to be fearless. You wouldn't go on some massive trek and not take a tent. So whatever you're doing in your life that feels scary, bring some comfort along for the ride too. That's the only way you're gonna be able to get through it. Make it sustainable, make it bearable, and be able to even contemplate doing scary things again. So here's to taking what works for you and leaving what doesn't. Have a fabulous Thursday, and I'll see you back here tomorrow morning.
