1672: You probably don't need a whole new system

Creative resistance can be one sneaky trickster, so today's episode is an attempt to keep it at bay!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So it's the start of September, it is officially that back-to-school feeling, and I know for many of us, even if we fucking hated school, we still get that itch to buy the new notebooks and pencil case, everything. And there's almost this temptation to do everything in this whole new way. Now, I love a fresh new leaf feeling. I am not trying to shit all over that, but I'm sharing with you today something that I need to remember as I get really excited to go back to projects and as I get back into things. And I know these are the words I need to hear: you do not need a new fancy system. You just kind of need to get on with it. Yes, there's room for improvement, but you can do quite a lot with what you've already got.

You do not need to go through every single file on your laptop. You do not have to have some massive organizational overhaul. While it might feel good at first, it will become really fucking overwhelming pretty quickly, and you'll realize that that was just a procrastination method, and you'll be even more tangled than when you started. Now, there are definitely times to overhaul your organization and your systems, but you can also be intentional about doing that. I know my temptation is to start on an evening a task that is mammoth, only to use up all my energy, be so much more overwhelmed than when I started, and just end up in a right pickle. So remember that your systems have got you this far, even if this far isn't how far you want to go. Remember that what you've got is good enough, and remember that procrastination and creative resistance can take many, many forms. And one of those many forms lies in things that look very productive on the surface but aren't really.

I hope this has saved somebody from going through their entire inbox and implementing a new system, from doing a sweep of every single file or your folder system in Dropbox or Google Drive. And I really hope this helps somebody use their precious energy for the things that might feel scary but are the things they actually want to do. And believe me, I am trying to take my own advice. So from this Type A overachiever, let's reserve our energy for the things that actually matter. I'll see you tomorrow.
