Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday. Now, I don't know about you, but sometimes life can feel like one big long to do list. It can feel like we spend our entire lives doing all the things that we have to do, all the things that we think we should be doing, and all the things other people expect of ourselves as well. And it can be fucking tiring, to say the least. So today I've got a challenge for you. And it is to spend five minutes doing something that you want to do. It does not have to be productive. It does not have to be for anybody else apart from yourself.

And it's definitely not about what you should be doing. I know all of us have wildly different lives with wildly different amounts of times and energy available to us, but I'm sure you can find five minutes somewhere during the day. The point of this isn't to make it the most enjoyable five minutes of the day, although if that happens, that is fabulous. It is more about what it represents, and that is the fact that you matter. You get time for you, and that you get to do something that you want to do for once. And if you're struggling to think about what you'd want to do, then maybe that is what you could use your five minutes for. To write a list of 10 things that you could do for future times. There's so much of life that can leave us feeling like we've got absolutely no control over how we spend our time.

And today I'm saying let's take back some of that control. You get to put yourself first. You get to do something just for you. And you do get to do things just for the hell of it, not because it's on your to do list. If this feels particularly uncomfortable, I recommend you give this a go. Even more so. And remember that one of the reasons this might feel so uncomfortable is, is because it is so countercultural. Putting ourselves first, doing something that is not just for productivity's sake, and doing something for ourselves.

So give it a go. See how it feels. This might just be something that you enjoy building into your everyday life. And know that time for you is never selfish. So have a good one, happy hump day, and I'll see you, as always, back here bright and early tomorrow morning.
