Whether you’re rethinking your routines or working through a creative project, today I’m sharing a phrase that could really help.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So as I settle into my life in Liverpool, one of the things I'm thinking about is how do I want my days to look, and what do I want my morning and evening routines to look like Now that we're not living in 3-month chunks, moving around all the time, and now we have more autonomy over our own space. And I find it simultaneously exciting and intimidating. Intimidating because my dream shitter pipes up and tells me unless it's perfect it doesn't count, and I can be somewhat of a chaos goblin. And as I'm trying to figure this all out, A quote from Matt Haig comes to me which I think can be beautiful for so many different areas of life and give us the flexibility and structure that we need, especially as people who often resist structure. And Matt Haig's quote is, find a routine that's baggy enough to live in. Now, I don't know about you, but when I hear that, it's almost like my shoulders go down and some of the pressure is off. Because ask me to create a really good or a just right morning routine, and I have all the ideas, and I become completely overwhelmed, and I do none of them.

But tell me to create a baggy routine, and I am in, because it is roomy. Comfort feels like one of the core pillars of the whole thing, and I also remember that it doesn't have to be as fixed as my brain thinks it is. And I think we can also zoom out and make this bigger by thinking about creating a life that's baggy enough to live in, something that has room to grow and change, where you don't feel constricted and you're free to pursue new avenues and new ideas without having to be one rigid thing. So I'm applying this to my morning routine, and I invite you to think about this whole baggy enough idea and apply it to whatever you're working at right now. It could be about a baggy enough creative practice, it could be about baggy enough friendships. You can apply this to so many things, and I think there's just something about the language that's compassionate and can allow us to get curious in places where we might otherwise feel a bit stifled. So try it on for size, baggy size, quite literally. And have a bit of a think, and I hope you find some unexpected delight this Thursday. I'll see you tomorrow.
