1708: It's okay to mark things as DNF

Today's episode might just be the permission slip you didn't know you needed!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So I know that there are many, many bookworms among us, me being one of them. And while we share a love of reading, there's a lot of disagreement and there's a lot of different opinions On sticking with a book or being okay with not finishing it. Now, I definitely fall on the line of being absolutely okay with not finishing a book. I feel like life is way too short for a book that you don't enjoy, and also it's to be expected, some things just aren't our cup of tea. And I think we can extend this to a lot of our life as well, because I don't believe that you should suffer through a personal or a passion project that you're not enjoying anymore. Some things are for different seasons, a bit like how we can see friendships and relationships, and letting go might be exactly how we find our next source of unexpected joy and can enrich our life in a way that maybe we didn't even know we needed. Now, I get the whole sunken cost fallacy thing, Sometimes we feel like we are too far in it that it would have been a complete waste of our time to give up the thing altogether, to which point I'll go back to something that I talk about a lot here on The Daily Pep: nothing is ever wasted.

You bring lessons and wisdom and skills and strengths from every single project you do, and they only make future projects richer. So if you've got something that you are forcing yourself through, or you're really pushing yourself through, to finish or to complete or to carry on with, please let this episode be a permission slip to not finish the book and to pick up a more exciting one. Of course, that's not to say everything has to be exciting or the best book ever, but I think we generally have a good idea of when to push through because we are learning something and we'll be glad we did it, as opposed to listening to the dream shitter on our shoulder that tells us that giving up would mean something about ourselves. To which I point to the fact that your dream-shitter is an absolute liar and loves spouting bollocks. So take this as your permission slip, I hope you have a fabulous Thursday, and I'll see you tomorrow!
