1545: You do have time (yes really)
Around here we're all too good at carving out time for others when they need it the most, but when it comes to ourselves it's a whole other matter. So today's episode is part permission slip, part bossy homework to claim some time for yourself.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. It is a bright, fresh new week, and whether you're feeling it or you're feeling shit, the aim of this podcast is to start your day with a compassionate, if not bossy, bang. Now, for many of us, we do not have the time that we would like, need, or deserve to dedicate to our creative projects, to the things that make us feel alive, or to simply feel like a human for a little bit. But here's the truth, and while it might not apply to 100% of people, it will apply to 99.9% of people, and that is you can carve out 1 hour a week for yourself. Now, it might be across multiple sittings, but it can be done. And I know this because you so regularly do this for other people. How many times during a week do you find the space for unplanned but important conversations with loved ones? And also, I know I'm guilty of this, how often do you end up on your phone just scrolling through more shit? I think one of the reasons we feel like, and it is accurate for a lot of us, we don't have enough time is that the time we wish we had almost becomes like this fantasy idealized thing. But you don't necessarily need an hour continually uninterrupted surrounded by your favorite materials with just the right lighting and the perfect notebook. You do not have to go to a particular place.
You can just stay on the sofa with a TV show on in the background and scribble something in your journal. You can put a notebook or something you're working on on the kitchen counter and reflect on things while you're waiting for the rice to cook. And while you might have a special place you'd prefer to do the creative work, you can also just go with what is the easiest and most likely to happen. Now obviously this is partially a logistics issue and a practical issue, But also, I think it's a permission issue too, because if we're socialized as women, we are not brought up to believe that we can claim time for ourselves, and often it just becomes second nature to put everybody else before yourself. So in case you need to hear it, you are allowed to carve out time for yourself. And like when a friend or colleague rings up with some kind of emergency,. You are allowed to have your own emergency. You are allowed to put everything on hold and go tend to yourself.
So that is my encouragement for you as we start this week. I know many of us have wildly complicated and nuanced lives, and I'm not trying to prescribe a one-size-fits-all solution here. And it is true that sometimes one of the ways in which we have to use our creativity is getting creative about how we can even find the time for it. But know that you deserve that time. You do not have to earn it. And even if you have to find it in the margins, there will be some for you to take. Have a fabulous start to your week. I hope you find some unexpected joy, and I can't wait to see you bright and early back here tomorrow.
