Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So this week we are ending with a sassy one, and I think it's been a while since we did one of these, so let's go there. Now, in the work I do, I get the joy and the privilege of of knowing so many women like us who maybe struggle with getting shit done, struggle with perfectionism, people pleasing, have so much great shit to give the world, and a really loud inner dreamshitter, alongside maybe a quietly rebellious streak where we just want to be fully ourselves, and maybe we've come to a bit of a fuck it moment in our lives. And today we're harnessing that kind of fuck it energy when it comes to people pleasing and the idea of disappointing others. So, for many of us, we would much rather say yes to somebody else to keep the peace, to avoid disappointment, or because we think we should. And what we forget is that sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes, when we are saying yes to other people, we're also saying no to ourselves. And the problem is it can feel easier in the moment to break our own promises to ourselves and to somebody else, but in the long term that leads to a lot of resentment, a lot of frustration, and it can make life feel just slightly unfulfilling and unsatisfying. And because we do it from a place of wanting to be helpful, being conscientious, being a good friend, family member, coworker.

Sometimes we can end up feeling grumpy or bitter and not really knowing why until we realize the full extent of maybe how often we've said no to ourselves. So I'm popping in with a firm but friendly reminder that every yes has a cost. Now, this isn't about becoming some total bitch and never saying yes again, ever.. But it's just a bit of a reminder to consider the fact that when you say yes to something, you are saying no to something else. And if we usually tend to end up on the bottom of our priority list in the first place, we might be saying no to ourselves more than we think. So if you want to put this into practice, I have a challenge for you this weekend, and it is to intentionally say yes to yourself. It doesn't have to be some massive thing. We're building a muscle.

I recommend maybe starting small if it feels a bit intimidating, but if you're like, fuck it, I'm all in, then please go all in. And I ultimately want you to remember that you do matter, your needs are important, you may have a fuck ton of things going on in your life, and so may your loved ones, and I'm not trying to diminish or invalidate that, but you also get to be part of the equation too. That is not selfish, it is very necessary. So that is your bossy homework for me for the weekend. Find a way to say yes to yourself. Know that in doing so, you are reminding yourself that you matter. And as always, everything changes when you believe you matter. So let's go get that. Let's claim our rebellion. And let's have a good one.
