817: 'No pain, no gain'. Really?
We're not about toxic positivity around here, but we're also not about suffering for the sake of it either. Today we're flipping our third piece of conventional wisdom on its head.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. So this week we are really turning some conventional wisdom on its head. And we are on day three. And the bullshit phrase we are examining today is the idea of no pain, no gain. Now, if you've been a listener for a while, it will come as no surprise to you that I am not about all of that toxic positivity bullshit. And I'm not going to start to now. So rest assured, we are not going down that line of thinking. But when we think of this idea of no pain, no gain, in all honesty, I think it can really fuck with our own sense of joy.
And what I mean by that is if there's something that we are naturally good at, that we love doing, that isn't painful to us, we can start to wonder whether it actually even counts or we can start to feel guilty about it. And we can also go down the rather wonky and unhelpful rabbit hole that unless something is painful, it doesn't amount to much, it's not worth doing or somehow we're doing it wrong. Now, the fact of life is that we cannot avoid pain. But my goodness, we do not need to go out of our way to make things more difficult in order to say that we did something or for something to be worth doing. I am a huge fan of this idea that joy can be an act of rebellion. But if we are to subscribe to this idea that we only get our gains through pain, then I think we can miss some really good shit along the way. This might sound really counterintuitive and it's not going to work for all situations, but if we really looked at how to make the things that we're trying to do more joyful, easier, simpler or more fun, I really do believe that we're going to get there and we're going to probably go further as well. So here's to intentionally adding more joy into what we're trying to achieve.
Here's to knowing that we can do some really epic shit in a way that does actually feel really good for us. And it doesn't just have to be all misery, discipline and pain. There are inevitably going to be times that are painful. And maybe in time there are some really great lessons that we can take from it. But let us not to try to make things harder than they need to be for the sake of our self worth and self validation. Your self worth is never on the line. You do not need to earn it. And in case you need to hear it today, you are doing fucking fabulously, my dear. See you tomorrow.
