1236: Ripping off the band-aid
It’s time to take back our power against creative resistance!

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Now, I know that I'm not the only one that really struggles doing the things that I want to do. For example, I wanna do a whole lot more writing and I wanna make some polymer clay earrings but I rarely make time for it. The creative resistance is real. I always manage to talk myself out of it, and then it becomes this thing that is really intimidating, and I've truly made a mountain out of a molehill. But today, I wanna give both of us a bit of a compassionate kick up the bum to do something we've wanted to do by the end of the year. And I'm suggesting this for two reasons. Number 1, it can be a really good way of taking the power back from our internal dream shitter so that instead of us telling ourselves, well, you want to do it all this time and you haven't done it and making that into a massive negative story about ourselves, we can say, no.
Actually, I did do it. And second, it makes going back to it easier. It is a bit like pulling the plaster or the Band Aid off. The first time probably will be a lot harder, but you might also remember why you want to do it in the 1st place. And that has definitely been the case for me this week. I've really wanted all year to really make time to sit down and write and also just get my polymer clay out, but I've barely done that this year. And this weekend was the first time I've got my polymer clay out for the entire year. And, yes, it was uncomfortable, but I also, for both of those things, realized just why I want to do them.
And it also makes it so much easier to go back to them. And I'll share with you something that I found incredibly helpful, and that is making the definition of success for both of those things simply the showing up. I didn't have to create anything wonderful. I wasn't defining my success based on my creation. It was just literally the making myself sit there and do it. So what is something that you'd be really grateful for just having done and ripped off the band aid for this year? How can we lower the resistance and sit with discomfort for a little while and move through the resistance? If you've been meaning to get back to yoga, maybe it's as simple as getting your mat out, sitting on it, and watching a YouTube video, not even doing any of the moves. If it is something more artistic like getting back to painting, maybe it's as simple as getting your paintbrushes out and testing the different colors you've got. We wanna really lower the bar here knowing that creative resistance can be incredibly confronting, making success achievable, and also allowing ourselves to feel proud when we've done it because it is something to feel proud of even if it feels really small.

As things are rounding down at this point of the year, we start to look ahead to next year, and that brings with it a lot of pressure. So for today’s episode, we’re taking an alternative look at the year ahead.

And that can be quite a complicated place to go because around here, we have very loud dreamshitters who really make themselves heard and known. And it can be hard to dream and scheme without just thinking of all the things that you said you were gonna do and reflecting on why you didn't do them. But today, I wanna flip it on its head a bit because thinking about all the things you want to do and are yet to do can feel like a shit ton of pressure. And a really helpful question I don't think any of us ask ourselves enough is, what do you not want to do? What would you like to do less of next year? We are so good at piling all the things on all the many, many plates we spin and then really beating ourselves up when we drop 1. That we forget that actually maybe it is about taking things off our plates or putting some of them down or replacing them with a slightly lighter load. So as we wrap up this year, as we look forward to next year, I simply invite you to think about it from a different perspective. What do you want less of? What do you want to do less of? And how can you make this happen? And just in case you need it, this is your permission slip to put your own needs on the table, to listen to what you want even if it feels slightly selfish, which it isn't, and to make your life easier. For so many of us, I think the end of the year is a hard one because there are the festivities if you celebrate, and there are a whole lot of expectations. But the reality is so many of them are really outside of our control.
So today, I wanna share a piece of the puzzle that you might not be thinking about that might just help you think differently about this time of the year and also take a fuckload of pressure off. Because here's the thing. So much of the time, we really do fill in the blanks when it comes to other people's expectations and also what other people think of us. We tend to make a massive amount of assumptions based on not always that much knowledge, and we forget that there's a really delightful side of things too. Here's the way I see it. The reality is you will never know just how many people you inspire and how many people you help feel seen and heard in your lifetime. We all leave these tiny breadcrumbs of kindness and pieces of us wherever we go. And as much as I wish we could illuminate them on a map, we'll never truly see the impact that we make.
So while we are making all these assumptions about ourselves and how other people see us or what we should be doing, It's also only fair that we spare some thoughts for the unseen parts that we don't see. And I think this is where self trust needs to come back into the equation, trusting that we're doing enough, trusting that we're making a mark and making a difference in ways that we can't even see, and trusting that the things we say to people will be received how we intend them. The reality is we can't control everything, but we can really, really stress ourselves out trying to anyway. So today's episode is my invitation for you to lean into a bit more trust, for you to let go of some of the control where you can, and to remember that you're making more of a difference than you know. And just because you can't see how, doesn't mean that you aren't. So that's a wrap on this week's daily peps. So around here, we tend to be pretty into personal development and personal growth. And I think it's fair to say that any one time, there are so many different projects we wanna work on, so many different areas we want to grow in, and there's all the things to do. But I wanna come at it from a slightly different angle today and talk about what we can prune instead. Because when we're always focusing on growth, what we're doing is always focusing on how far we have to come. And for a lot of us, that can feel like a lot of pressure, especially when we have limited time, energy, and capacity, especially if we're saying yes to a whole lot of things. So for this hump day, I simply want you to ask yourself, what could do with a bit of pruning in your life right now? What are some areas that would benefit from a bit of tender loving pruning? Because we don't always have to be watering things. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is let something go or really intentionally choosing what we're saying yes to. And that inevitably involves saying no to something else.
I know I used to be a massive, massive overcommitter. And the idea that for everything you say yes to, you're saying no to something else was absolutely revolutionary to me. And I also realized the thing I was saying no to most often was myself. So just popping this in today for some food for thought and in case you need the reminder. I hope something unexpected and fabulously joyful happens to you today. Here's to holding onto the sparkles and the light in what can be a really dark month. And here's to knowing that we are creeping ever closer to the shortest day of the year, which means that light is on its way. Have a good one, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1231: Have you moved the goal post?
So often we beat ourselves up about where we are, and fail to even realise how far we've come, or how much we've moved the goal posts! If you can relate, this episode is for you!

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. So yesterday here on the daily pep, I shared with you 2 reminders that I think we all need this December. And today I'm popping in with a question that I think is really helpful as we start to wind down the year. For many of us, there are some funky things that start happening in December. We start being really, really extra hard on ourselves. We start thinking that we can achieve everything by midnight on the 31st December, and we start creating this picture of ourselves, which isn't entirely accurate. It's like we completely forget what we did for the rest of the year, and we get into this cruel game of comparison between earlier this year, January us, and December us right now.
So today, I wanna interrupt some of the bullshit with a question, and it is this. Have you moved the goalposts? For so many areas of our lives when it comes to setting goals and our definition of success, we start out with one idea, but then we continually move and move and move and extend what we expect of ourselves. We start off by telling ourselves we want to create a simple weekly creative writing practice and end up really pissed off with ourselves that we haven't miraculously written this New York Times bestseller. And so often, it is actually really subtle. It's a bit like we dangle this carrot in front of ourselves. And just as we're about to get there, we inch it further and further away from ourselves. And if you're anything like me, then you get really pissed off because why aren't you feeling fulfilled and why aren't you feeling proud of yourself? So as you're starting to do your December reflections, I really invite you to compassionately think about where the goalpost started and where it's ended up and in what ways you're moving that carrot. Now to be clear, this is not an exercise in self blame.
We do that enough already. So instead, it is simply about getting curious and looking at where we originally wanted to go and making sure we're making a fair comparison. Many goal posts do change because that is the nature of the projects. And like we're talking about yesterday, we don't know what we don't know when we begin. But that doesn't mean that we should be a 100 miles further than we thought we'd be. And, actually, sometimes pivoting and going in a different direction can be as good, if not better. So have a think about your own goalpost today. Be compassionate with yourself and try not to use this as another thing to beat yourself up about.
Maybe see how you can give yourself the carrot and acknowledge how far you've already come rather than just focusing on how far you have to go. Keep going. Keep being you. And I'll see you tomorrow.

1230: Two helpful December reminders
If your inner critic is playing you the Best Of Things You Didn't Do This Year on repeat, listen up!

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday to you. So I think it's fair to say we have officially reached the time of the year where we tend to be extra hard on ourselves. For so many of us, we would much rather hibernate than do pretty much anything else. We're fresh out of fucks left to give. Yet it's like our dream shitter is playing a best of tape of all the things we said we were gonna do this year that we didn't. So in case that tape is playing very loud or on repeat, I wanna share 2 things with you that I've got a feeling you might need to hear. Number 1 is, as you're comparing what you did do this year versus all the things that you plan to do or wanted to do, Spare a moment for all of the unexpected shit that came up along the way that you dealt with because you have to, and that counts for unexpected joy as well.
January you cannot possibly guess what the year is gonna entail. Every year, we do and deal with so many more things than we realize, yet we have such a narrow view on what we got done because we are comparing it to such a small list of things that we set months ago. So that is my first reminder for you. And the second reminder is this. You don't know what you don't know. When we're setting goals, we do not know all of the things that a project or a goal entails. It's only until we do the thing that we figure out just how many steps are involved, the bits that are way trickier or take much longer than we thought, and also the resistance that comes up too. You don't know what you don't know, and that is not some kind of personal failure.
That is just a matter of fact. So I think it's only fair we give ourselves room for error, and we also give ourselves a shit ton of grace. The truth is for many people, this has been a hard year. One of my favorite workshops that I do every year is a workshop where we say fuck off to the year. We let go of the pressure, the guilt, and the shame. We find all of the gold flex, and it is such a confidence boosting workshop. But the thing is, when I first did it in 2020, I was so excited to do the fuck off 2020 workshop, then the next year, do a fuck year 2021 workshop. But the truth is, we've had the fuck off 2020 workshop, 21, 22, 23, and now we're having fuck off 2024 because life has just been hard.
At this point of the year where we are all so exhausted from the year, pushing ourselves is probably gonna end up with diminishing returns. So where you can, take the pressure off. And if you want a really, really good, warm, wholehearted, wholesome, but also sassy boost of confidence to end the year, my fuck off 2024 workshop is happening next Wednesday. 1229: This season looks different for everyone

For some people, we love the holidays, we love the bright lights, and it makes us feel really cozy and loved. And for other people, this season is complicated.
It brings up feelings of loneliness. It just feels hard, and it brings up so much stuff. So for today's daily pep, I want you to lean into whatever this season feels like for you and do what is the most loving and nurturing thing for you. For you, it might be actually watching loads of horror films and going as anti Christmas as you possibly can. It could look like being really selective about the things you love and really intentionally avoiding the things you don't. And it could also look like making some hard decisions that are gonna protect your well-being even if they might not go down too well. The whole point here is to meet yourself where you're at. It is okay if you hate this season.
It's okay if you love this season. It's okay if you have no particular feelings. But don't try and force yourself into feeling something that you're not feeling. For most of us around here, authenticity tends to be one of our core values, and we can't fake it till we make it even if we tried. But sometimes we get caught up in trying really fucking hard because we feel like there's something wrong with how we're feeling or other people want us to feel a certain way. But if that's not happening, it's not happening and that's okay. So lean into what you need this season. I'm all about leaning into the season and following the seasons.
But what I really mean there is following your own internal seasons. They do not have to line up with the actual season we're in because the most important thing is that it's gotta be true for you. So have a think today about what season you're in and what would be some really nice ideas to lean into that season and really honor yourself. 1227: You are allowed to change your mind
If ever worry about being flakey, and end up cutting off your nose to spite your face, then this one’s for you.

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy hump day to you. So as I'm navigating a lot of health stuff at the moment and rethinking going back to long term travel and putting it off for a little bit, I've been really thinking about what it means to commit to plans, to stay flexible, and what it looks like to give yourself permission to change plans in general. For so many of us who are multi passionate, the idea of changing plans brings with it a whole load of shit. Chances are we might already struggle with feeling flaky, or we might be used to the really horrible conversations with people where they say, wait. I thought you were gonna do this or or what happened to that. But the truth is it only has to make sense and it only has to work for you and your life because you're the one living it, and you are allowed to change your mind. We are not fortune tellers.
As much as sometimes we might like to, we cannot see into the future. We have no crystal ball. And one of life's biggest skills is being able to change and adapt when necessary, whether we want to or whether it's in our control or not. And I think because we carry a lot of that shame around being flaky or not wanting to change our minds or go back on our words, what we can end up doing is cutting off our nose to spite our face. So for this hump day, I just want you to know that it's okay to change your mind, and I also think it takes courage to change your mind. It shows that you are looking at and assessing what you need. You're putting that on the table, and you're being pretty damn kind to yourself. If you're in a situation where you're not sure why you're changing your mind, I like to come back to the intention behind our decisions.
And a really good question is, are you making that decision from a place of hope, or are you making it from a place of fear? So I think that is enough food for thought for today. Happy hump day. You are doing it. We are allowed to change our minds, and we are allowed to build a life we love. I'll see you tomorrow.

And today, I simply wanna remind you that it is okay to go at your own pace. Here's the thing. It is all too easy to compare ourselves to other people and what they're doing, but those people are not us. You could have a 100 people in a very similar life situation with the same day ahead of them, and how they approach a day is gonna be completely different. The same way as you could ask a 100 people to write a story with the exact same characters going through the exact same things, and they would all be wildly different.
We all have different flavors of hard, and we all have wildly different circumstances. And things that might feel really easy to us might be really hard for other people and vice versa. And your own pace might differ on different days as well. The same way as we all have different yesterdays and we all have different tomorrows. I think a lot starts to change when we accept that we don't go the same pace as everybody else. Our lives and our days don't look the same. So to compare them would be to make an unfair comparison and to listen to the pace we actually need to go at could make a really big difference. Now as always, so many of these things are much easier said than done, And sometimes it can be really frustrating, which is a massive understatement to have to go at a slower or a faster pace than you would like to go at.
So give yourself all of the grace, do it at your own pace, and try and remove the whole failing or succeeding thing from the entire equation. For example, being a morning person does not make you a more morally superior person, the same way as having a chronic illness certainly does not make you less than. So here's to honoring where you're at. Here's to really trying to go at your own pace today. And here's to finding some unexpected joy along the way. I'll see you tomorrow. 1225: A tweak would do you good!
It's so tempting to buy into this idea that any big change requires major effort. Today I'm sharing a reframe that really helps me and seriously takes the pressure off!

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Monday to you. So, to kick off this week, I have a question for you that could be really helpful this week and also help you take the pressure off. And it's this: What are the minor tweaks you can make this week that would make a difference? For so many of us, myself, absolutely a 1000000 percent included, whenever I look at the week ahead, whenever I look at all the projects I've got going on, or whenever I look at my life in general or my to do list, It's really easy to see all the really big things and the things that need overhauling. A very minor example of this is my laptop. My goodness. File management is not my strongest suit, And it is so easy to convince myself not to even bother until I've got some serious time to wade through the shit. But here's the thing. With a couple of minor tweaks, like making shortcuts to folders that I use a lot and renaming a couple of important things with things that I actually find, I'm gonna make my workflow and also my life so much easier, and I didn't have to wait for that massive chunk of time.
It can be so tempting to put these things on this someday pile. But then when someday doesn't happen, we beat ourselves up. Or when we have free time, we convince ourselves we can't do anything for ourselves because we've got this massive fuck off sized backlog. So in case you wanna hear it today, here is my reminder. You don't always have to go big or go home. There are many times when I would much prefer to go small and go nap. And I'm extending this permission slip to you just in case you need it. There are so many areas of our lives that we think we have to do a massive overhaul, and it's gonna take so long.
And some of it will. But for a lot of things, tiny tweaks are gonna help, and not everything needs open heart surgery. So that's my pep talk to kick off this week. 1224: It’s time for a rebel advent-ure!
Time to do this season a bit differently! Today’s episode is a permission slip to lean into however you do this season.

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. I think it's fair to say that for a lot of us, we get to this time of the year and can't believe the date. But seriously, this year, how did we get nearly December? For today's daily pep, I wanna give you a massive permission slip to lean into however you do this season. Some people love it. Some people hate it, and there is no one right way to feel. This time of the year can be complicated for so many reasons. There is a shit ton of pressure.
There is this expectation for everything to feel joyful and to be perfect but you are allowed to do it messy and you get to opt out of celebrating if you want to as well. It's so easy to imagine how you think you should be feeling, but it's one thing to do life as it is. Let alone do life pretending to be somebody you're not. So as we wrap up this week, I just simply wanna remind you that however you feel about this season is however you feel and that's okay. You are allowed to feel what you feel even if it doesn't match up with those around you. And even if, like me, you absolutely love this season and can't get enough of the fairy lights, that doesn't mean you have to say yes to all the stress. I believe it is also the season for shortcuts and for joy, but also for gentleness. Now if you want to come on a bit of a rebel adventure this December, then I have something really fun and also helpful up my sleeve.

1221: Nothing in nature blooms all year round
Today we’re doubling down on yesterday’s message on not expecting ourself to finish the year strong.

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So one of the quotes that I love to share the most around here is that one where it says, nothing in nature blooms all year round, so don't expect yourself to either. And it's one that I come back to time and time again because, my goodness, we are so good at piling the pressure on and always expecting ourselves to be doing new things and thriving and working hard. And we can easily forget that that isn't our normal default mode. We cannot expect ourselves to be on 100% of the time. So I share that today as a reminder. If you are feeling fresh out of fucks for the rest of the year, you're feeling really tired, or you wish you could just hibernate. Now I know we don't have that option, but we do have the option not to do it all.
It is only natural to get to this part of the year and feel pretty fucking exhausted. I think we'd all agree that it has been a year. And when you take a big picture view of everything that's happened this year, it's no surprise that we're exhausted, yet we can give ourselves such a hard time about it. So my question for you today is this. What if you made peace with the fact that you've done all the big things this year and that the rest of this year is for coasting and doing what you have to do. In yesterday's episode, I shared that fabulous Jane Carrington quote about not having to end the year strong. And I know today, I'm essentially just double downing on what I said yesterday, but it's because we need to hear it. We are so damn hard on ourselves.
We have such high expectations of ourselves. But I just wanna give you a huge permission slip to take your foot off the gas, Know that you've done enough. Know that your self worth is not on the line between here and January, and that you've done a pretty fucking good job this year. I am taking my own advice and doing the bare minimum. I'm meeting myself where I'm at, which can be really hard and try not to judge myself. And I'm taking the pressure off myself to bloom, and it is really helping. So that is my food for thought for you today. And just a friendly reminder that doors are still open for my group coaching program, One Woman Band Club.

1220: F*ck the last minute sprint!
As we start to approach the end of the year, there can be a huge amount of pressure to put our foot on the gas, so today I’m sharing a quote that’s really been helping to ground me, and I think it’ll help you too.

Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. It has been a hot minute since I recorded a new episode as I have had this stinking cough and a sore throat. I've also just been under the weather and also going on a diabetes journey as well and needed a bit of time. But my goodness, I have missed this. I'm glad to be back. And while my voice isn't quite right, I couldn't stand being away for another week. So for today's daily pep, I wanna share something with you that I heard the other day that felt like it took a whole weight off my shoulders. And it comes from an email from the fabulous Jen Carrington where she wrote, you don't have to end the year strong.
And I don't know about you, but I really, really needed to hear that. This year has been a year. I know a lot of us are feeling that way. And it is just generally a really funny time of the year because even though our bodies say that we should be hibernating, there's all these things around us that have us feeling like we should be trying to get all the things done by the end of the year. But my goodness, we have done a lot this year. We have survived a lot this year, and now is not the time for pulling out the last minute sprint and burning ourselves out, maybe even more so, by the end of the year. So this is your permission slip to just do the necessary, to put yourself into maintenance mode, and to do the bare minimum if you can. Now that isn't an option for all of us.
We all live wildly different lives. So if you're unable to slow down, then the biggest permission slip I have for you is to take all the shortcuts, see what you can do in an easier way, and remind yourself that this is being smart. It isn't cheating. So for me and you both, we do not have to end the year strong. We do not have anything to prove to ourselves or to other people. Our productivity is not a marker of our self worth, and we have done enough already. 1206: A powerful question
Today’s episode is an important question to ask yourself this Tuesday. Let’s break out the fine china, our best dress and celebrate ourselves!

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. Today's Daily Pep is a simple and a powerful one. But before we dive into it, I just wanna give you a friendly heads up that the Rebel Rouses pop up store closes today. I really wanted to sit down with you today and remind you in case nobody's told you lately that you're pretty fucking amazing.
In the personal development sphere, we tend to get really excited by where we want our life to be and all the things we want to do and all the things we want to be, but rarely do we get the reminder that we are actually okay the way we are. Yes. There might be places you wanna go. Yes. There might be things you wanna be, but you right now are not broken. You are not a problem to be fixed, and you are good enough the way you are. I know for me, I can get really caught up into thinking that, okay, I'll do this thing once I become this idealized version of myself. But actually, I don't think that's very fair because it runs on this logic that we're not good enough to do the thing already.
We just have to work harder, and I know we're all pretty similar around here. Our goalposts always change. We're always moving them, and it can feel like we are always putting off our dreams. So if you feel the same, know that you absolutely are not alone. And you also don't have to be this new fabulous version of yourself to go after your dreams, to make the big scary asks and do the things that you want to do. We all have things about ourselves that we wish we could change or things that we regret or things that we're not that happy with. But I really can't help feeling that putting things off until we're some new improved version of ourselves just really isn't fair. We shouldn't have to put our dreams and our plans and our happiness on a someday, maybe pile.
And we get to give ourselves the good stuff right now. We get to use the really fancy fine china. We get to wear our best dress. And I say this as somebody with no fancy China and no best dress, but you know what I mean. So as you go about today, I invite you to think about what would you do if you knew you were good enough already? See what comes up for you. Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by either how much compassion comes up for you or how ballsy it sounds, and dare to listen. You are doing so much better than you think you are, and I think you will look back really impressed and inspired by just how much of a brave motherfucker you are even if you don't feel it right now. And what I tend to say is that courage doesn't tend to feel like courage in the moment, so keep that in mind as well.

1205: Find the tiny moments of joy
We’re kick starting the new week with a challenge that runs counterintuitive to so much of the productivity advice we hear, but is SO important!

Good morning, daily peppers. And a very happy Monday to you. It is the start of a new week, and it's time to kick off this new week with a compassionate bang. So in the personal development world, one of the things that I think is really fun is doing experiments, seeing life through different lenses, and really challenging ourselves in a really fun way. And I've got a fun challenge for you this week. And is this, what if this week you measured success not by the amount of things that you got done on your to do list, but by the number of tiny moments of joy? I don't know about you, but it is so easy to go into the week with so much shit I have to do that I barely stop to take a look around me, and I get so involved in what I'm doing. And while I get a tenner shit done, I probably miss a load of tiny moments of joy. That could be by being on my phone and check an email when I'm in the queue in a shop. It can be by just putting my head down and not taking a proper break. And I know I'm not alone.
For so many of us, we do naturally worry about having enough time and the sheer number of things that we need to squeeze into the seemingly shrinking amount of time we have. But I think one of the things that we can completely unintentionally end up doing is spending so much time on focusing on getting everything done and being as efficient as possible and missing a lot of the small magical moments. And it doesn't have to be major. It could be intentionally taking a 5 minute break to look out the window and watching the birds. It can be getting a bit of fresh air when usually we would power through, and just taking in the world around us when we get the bus or when we're in the queue rather than trying to be productive at the same time. The older I get, the more I realize that I am truly shit at multitasking. And I find that very frustrating in the past, but I'm starting to find that quite nice. Because I've given up trying to do tons of things at once because I know my brain just doesn't operate that way.
My brain feels a hell of a lot calmer for it, and I feel like I get to experience more of the magic moments. So that is my challenge for you today. What if you measured this week's success by the number of small moments of joy you receive rather than the amount of work you do and just see what happens? At the end of the day, it's all an experiment. We tend to be very curious around here. So let's put our curious superpowers to use. Have a fabulous rest of your day. 1204: Maybe it's not the season
If you're feeling like you're pushing the same boulder up the same hill day after day, today I've got a different perspective that might help!

Good morning, daily peppers and a very happy Friday to you We are so close to the weekend. We made it. Before we get going, a quick reminder that my physical product, pop up shop, is live. Orders close on the 5th November. So if you'd be meaning to check it out, now is the time to do so. Now on to today's show.
So one of the funny things I find about the daily pep in general is that you could listen to a whole bunch and you could get completely contradicting messages. Because sometimes we need like yesterday the firm but compassionate kick up the bum. Other times we need permission to take a break. And our journeys really aren't very linear. And part of that is because we've all got different seasons. There are times in our life that are really for pushing forward, and there's other times where we need to hibernate and conserve our energy a bit. And that's what I want to talk to you about today. If you are pushing and pushing and pushing and it still feels like you're pushing a boulder up the hill, Maybe it's time to just turn around and see what else is around you as well because it might not be the season for that particular boulder.
It could be that you're at the bottom of one hill, but you're also on the top of another hill and you could push something else down quite easily and really find your flow there. A more concrete example might be, maybe you really want to start a novel, but you're finding it so hard to face a blank page and it just feels impossible. But on the other hand you've also got this nudge to research this really specific thing that isn't anything to do with your novel. Maybe it is the season for that one instead. And maybe by focusing on something else you're gonna get all kinds of inspiration for your novel that you might not have found otherwise. And because you've stopped trying to push it so hard, it relieves some of the pressure. And one day you wake up and you're just ready to write it or you decide to write a short story and that's your way in instead. Sometimes the path we take isn't gonna be the path we thought we would take.
Sometimes we need to stop trying so hard at some things and put our focus on other things and trust that it's all part of our process. And it's also worth bearing in mind what kind of personal season you're in right now. Sometimes we're more introverted, sometimes we're more extroverted, and I love that Zora Neale Hurston quote that there are years that ask questions and years that answer. And maybe you're in slightly different a place than you thought you were, and that's not a bad thing and maybe opens even more possibilities than you previously thought. So just some things for you to think upon as you're going about your day, your life, and your projects. And know this, you are always so much further ahead than you think you are. And you are also so much more capable than you think you are. Have a fabulous weekend.

1202: A sassy hump day pep talk
One of the things we all excel at is getting in our own way. So if you you're in need of a firm pep talk, listen up!

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for this hump day, sassy meg is back. In case you need a compassionate but firm, kick up the bum, and a reason to go do the scary thing. Because here's the thing, There are always gonna be very good reasons to not do the thing. Life will never line up perfectly and there will be very valid reasons to put things off. But very valid reasons can also be excuses and we only really know that if we get really honest and quiet with ourselves. The same way as there are so many reasons not to do the thing. We love justice and fairness around here.
So if we look at the other side of things, there are also many, many valid reasons to go and do the thing as well. Now you do not have to go do the thing to the best of your ability. You do not have to pick the scariest thing you could possibly do and go and do that, but you can make at least some small steps. And those small steps can be tiny. It doesn't matter. The point is of getting some momentum and putting one foot in front of the other and just getting going. So today, as you listen to this, I just want you to be honest about what in your life right now are reasons versus excuses. And try and get curious rather than judgmental.
And also cut yourself some slack. We don't do scary things because they're scary. Hard things are hard. Our brain also has a built in negativity bias. It also really wants to keep us safe. And we're also battling against our inner dream shooter. We have a lot going on here, but here's the thing. You have done hard and scary things before and you can do them again.
Try and have even 10% more faith in yourself. Look back at all the things you've done and take that tiny step today. And to go back to that Winnie the Pooh quote I think most of us have heard, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. 1201: Eat birthday cake for breakfast

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So there's something that somebody said to me once that absolutely blew my mind. And it's this idea that we can have birthday cake not on our birthday and we can have it for breakfast. Now I grew up as a good girl.
I wanted all the gold stars, and I think many of us can relate to that. And I think it takes a lot of deprogramming and unconditioning to realize that actually we get to do things our own damn way and we also get to create what gives us the gold stars when it comes to our lives. And I think this birthday cake example just really makes me laugh because it is so simple yet so fucking obvious that if you wanted to buy yourself a birthday cake not on your birthday and seriously enjoy it, you get to do that the same way as you get to make so many different choices and decisions in your own life that you alone get to decide or you get decide what feels right for you. It's so easy to get caught up in the trap of thinking that there's a right way to do things or we have to follow the status quo. But really, we get to make our own damn rules. I don't know about you, but sometimes I find myself in a bit of a bind in terms of the there's part of me that is the good girl who wants all the gold stars. And at the same time, there's this massively rebellious part of me that knows that I get to make up the rules, and it can be really hard being caught up in the 2 worlds. But one way I think we can really challenge that whole good girl thing is to start doing things like having birthday cake for breakfast.
And I mean that literally if that feels good for you. Taking small steps to remind yourself that you have autonomy, you have freedom, and I know this might not sound that liberating, but it really is. That nobody cares as much as you do, and people aren't necessarily studying your actions as closely as you are. So for today, what is your version of eating birthday cake when it's not your birthday? What is a rule or a convention that you can break that is gonna make you feel really good or remind you that you've got more power than you think you do? So put your thinking cap on. 1200: Make your best guess
Today I'm sharing a reminder that I very much need to hear - that your best guess is good enough, and you can move ahead without 100% certainty.

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So before we get started this week, I wanted to share a really fun announcement with you, and that is to let you know that I have opened my very first pop up shop. For the last couple of years, I've been doing the rebel riser's calendars, which have just been so much fun. And this year, I have added to the range with not only the calendar but some postcards, some bookmarks, and a weekly desk planner. So if you're like me and you fucking love stationery and you also fucking love a bit of rebel rousing, I think you're gonna love it. So I thought it would be helpful at the start of the week to pop in with a reminder that I know is definitely helping me right now. And it's the fact that you don't have to be a 100% certain to move ahead.
Around here, we tend to be overachievers, perfectionists, and we're also really conscientious. And we might have been brought up with the notion that everything has to be just right before we take a step forward, but I am calling absolute bullshit on that. The truth is, no matter how much research we do, we're probably never gonna be literally 100% sure. And sometimes the more research we do, the more we find out we don't know which on one hand can be a good thing, but we tend to just go into research mode harder. The best thing we can do is check-in with ourselves and see what feels right. We can do the research, but not until the point that we are completely overwhelmed, and we can make our best guess. The fact of the matter is, yeah, when we look back, there are some decisions we might have made differently. But it's really easy to see that because we know hindsight is 2020.
So if you are feeling muddled over something, if you are feeling stuck in the mud, or if you're waiting for a 100% certainty, let this be your permission to just make your best guess and know that that is good enough. And also, there are very few things in life we can't undo if we want to. So happy Monday. I hope this week brings you some fabulous unexpected joy. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1197: Gather more data
When it comes to change, making a decision or facing a crossroads, there's only so much we can do just thinking about it. Today I'm giving you a challenge to get out of your head and take the next small step!

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy hump day to you and a very happy Wednesday to you. For today's Daily Pep, I wanna remind you just to take the next step. For so many of us, there are so many things we wanna do, yet we are so good at talking ourselves out of it. Including for very noble reasons because we are conscientious. We wanna make sure we've done the research, and we wanna do the best that we can. But the problem is perfectionism is a sneaky fucker, and it can can often feel like we're not taking the next step because we're not ready for it or there's one more thing to learn or we're having hypothetical arguments with ourselves in our head if you're anything like me. So today, I wanna give you and me a compassionate but firm kick up the arse to take the next step.
Now I don't mean take a big step. I just mean take any movement in the direction that you're looking in because chances are you've thought about it a lot already, and also you know what you need to do. Often, we can get so caught up in our head overthinking things and thinking about every single possible outcome. But the truth in a lot of situations is you're not gonna find out until you do it, and you don't know what you don't know if you're at a crossroads or you're going through some transition period it is easy to sit and think about all the ways it could go right all the ways it could go wrong, and how you think you're gonna feel, but you don't know if you don't take action. Now I am definitely not saying just run-in that direction and throw caution to the wind. But what I am asking is how could you go out there and get a bit of data? How can you start actually testing the waters in a way that will help you move forward? So for example, say you want to do some big huge career change, and you might be looking at some qualification or you might be looking at a job opening. Rather than mulling it over in your head trying to guess what would be the best answer, see if you can go talk to somebody who does it or see if you can go find out some information. Say, for example, you're getting into creative writing and you're not sure whether to start a novel, give a short story a go.
Be open to finding more facts taking action and giving yourself more data to work with so that is my challenge for you today and also before I go, I just want to say try not to go down that all too familiar shitty shame spiral whereby you feel bad for not doing the thing, and then you feel bad for feeling bad about it. Change is scary. It takes a lot of courage, so give yourself some grace. Our brains are also very good at protecting ourselves. And in the words of the fabulous late Barbara Sher, it's only too late if you don't start now. And starting can begin with an incredibly small step. So happy hump day, you are doing fabulously, and I'll see you tomorrow.
