094: The fear of starting over
We're all afraid of failure, things not working out and having to start over. But what if I told you it's already one of your strengths?
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pet, which is the only daily podcast for creative, multi, passionate and fabulous women like yourselves who've just got started much to give the world that only they can give. If you read much to do with creativity online, or being a creative person or living a creative life, it will not take you long to come across this idea of failure and just how scared we are of it and how we all have to push past it to live a creative life. This week I want to start by addressing something that I think we all struggle with and it trips all of us up and it's this fear of starting over. I don't know about you, but I've had projects where in the middle of it, I just want to put it all in the bin. And sometimes I'm so tempted to, but the idea of starting all over again does not fill me with joy. It's the same as when we think about failure. We think about hitting rock bottom and we think about having to dig our way out.
And it can be just so overwhelming. But here's the thing. I don't think many of us realize we start over all the time in our lives in so many different ways. When we finish an endeavor and get excited about a new idea, we're starting over. When we enter a new season of our life, we're starting over. When we finish a book or a TV series we love, we're starting over. The truth is that we fear something that we are already so naturally good at that we don't even realise. We don't think of all the different stops and starts in our lives and all the times that we just have to start over.
So if you put it into this train of thought, maybe the fear of starting over isn't as big and as intimidating as we actually thought. Maybe it's less of a mountain and more of a hill. We have a great capacity to start over and we have a great capacity for failure. But sometimes it's just about the lens at which you look at it through. Obviously not all of the time we feel like failure. It's a big, huge learning moment and we can't see the silver lining. That's completely natural. That's human too.
Sometimes we are just going to get pissed off. Sometimes it's not going to feel that great and we're allowed to feel that too. But if there's an area of your life where you need to start over, or maybe there's something you used to love doing that you haven't done in so long. Or maybe you've got a lot of experience in starting writing novels and stopping halfway through starting again. It just feels redundant, or it just feels too much, or you can predict how it's going to go before you've even started. Just start again. Starting again is so much more compassionate than beating yourself up, undermining all the things you have done and not taking into account all the things you have finished and all the things that have gone well. So here's to seeing starting over in a new way, and I can't wait to share part two with you tomorrow.
But it is a bit of a follow up from this and I think it's something that is just gonna feel good and really solidify this. So I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow and have a fabulous day.
