1702: On intentionally defining success

Today we're focusing on acknowledging intangible wins and getting really intentional about how we define success.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday and a very happy hump day to you. So I've recently moved to Liverpool, and one of the things that I really, really want to do is find my people and join creative communities and really build my home here. Now that of course involves putting myself out there and going to a lot of new things, and as I do so, it is reminding me of a big lesson around success and how we kind of track it or notice it. So for example, one of the recent events I went to is a local writers group And during the workshop, we were asked to do a piece of writing.

Now, this isn't to put myself down, but the piece of writing I produced was pretty shit. But I managed to catch myself before I really started being too harsh on myself by reminding myself that my definition of success was not about producing a stellar piece of writing. It's also been a while since I've written any fiction, So of course I was bound to be rusty, but the marker of success was actually putting it in my diary and going, not finding a way to wiggle out of it before I went because it felt a bit scary, but actually being in the room and showing up. I even volunteered to read my piece aloud because I wanted to challenge myself, remind myself that I can stand and speak in front of people.

Again, a little bit rusty. And my delivery, again, just being honest, not hard on myself, was really not good. But I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it and put it in the evidence bank. Now, if I just looked at it from a performance and a literary perspective, it was a bit of a flop, and I really could have taken that to heart. But it was never about that in the first place. And I think that's where being intentional really helps. Figuring out, okay, what do we actually want out of this experience? What are the markers of success? And what are the things that actually matter? I know that my writing and my performing will improve as I do this more often, but first it starts with showing up. So if you are beating yourself up about something lately or being really hard on yourself, check in with your markers of success.

And if you too are embarking on something new, Get intentional about what really matters to you and also what is fair to put on your shoulders as you begin. So here's to doing scary things, here's to putting ourselves out there, and here's to acknowledging the wins even if they are a bit less tangible. Have a good one, and I'll see you back here tomorrow or in your inbox later today if you're part of my email community for the latest edition of Wildcard Wednesday.
