097: You won't be everybody's cup of tea (and that's okay!)

It's not your job to make the whole world like you or your work. The truth is, you will be some people's dream cup of tea, you won't be others. And that's kind of the whole point! That's what we're diving into in today's episode of The Daily Pep!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. I hope you're having a fabulous week so far. And if you've ever worried about what other people think of you, well, this one, this one's definitely for you. So I was thinking the other day about how much I'm really particular when it comes to a cup of tea and bananas. So with cups of tea, the tea bag can be in there about maximum 10 seconds. That's like my perfect cup of tea. And there's got to be milk and two sugars. And when it comes to bananas, when they're in the green stage, that's how I like them.

The minute they start to go too ripe, not a fan won't even touch them. And unless they're going in, banana bread. And the reason I'm bringing all this up is that I think it's such a great metaphor for how the world sees us, how we see the world, and how it's not up to you to determine whether people like you or not. And ultimately, you don't actually have much control over whether people like you, because we all have our individual tastes, we all have our individual quirks, and we all like things our way. So much of the time. It is so easy to get caught up into worrying about what people think of you, worrying whether people like you, worrying whether people don't like you, and wondering if you should change a part of yourself because of that. And today I just want to give a huge fuck that to all of that shit. Like, there are a million ways to enjoy a cup of tea and have a preference when it comes to that.

It's the same when it comes to people. It is not your job to make people like you. And honestly, and I know this is a hard one for all of us because we're so conditioned thinking the exact opposite, that it's not really up to you to worry about whether people like you. I know that the minute I started talking about how strong I like my tea and how ripe I like my bananas, there'll be so many of you who disagree and have your own preferences. I know there are probably loads of you who love the tea bag in there for a good couple of minutes, even 10 minutes. And there are loads of you who love the bananas when they're way past ripe and you wouldn't even dream of touching them before that stage. And then there's going to be some of you who really don't really give a shit either way. So the reason I'm banging on about tea bags and bananas Today, which could be a totally different podcast.

I'll just leave that there is. Because I just want to remind you, when it comes to putting things out there into the world, when it comes to your creativity, not everybody has to like it. Not everybody has to get it. And that's okay. As tempting as it can sometimes be, never ever dull your shine to make other people more comfortable. There are people who are going to be your cup of tea, and they're going to be people who just simply aren't. I always wind my mum up because I think that she has a dislike for the most random celebrities. I can't see what she doesn't like.

But that's the whole thing. That's what makes you you. We all have our different preferences. There's going to be people who think you're literally the dog's bollocks, and there's going to be other people who just won't. They don't think you're the dog's bollocks. There are people who are going to be your kind of people, and there are people that just simply aren't. And that's okay. So you just focus on doing you.

You are not going to please everybody. That is so besides the point. And if you did please everybody, well, I'm afraid to tell you that you'd probably start becoming pretty bland pretty quickly. And I know through the fact that you are listening to this podcast, you are not bland. You are anything but. So here's to being fabulously you. Here's to knowing that life is too short to worry about any of that stuff. And here's to liking your cups of tea and your bananas exactly the way you like them.

I hope you have a fabulous day and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow. It's nearly Friday. We have nearly made it. See you then.
