1718: Build and find your own unique rhythms

When it comes to building a life we love, rest is really important, and today's episode is a permission slip to lean into your own unique definition of rest.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Now, around here we are working to build a life that we love, and that looks as unique as your fingerprint. Things that work for other people might not work for you. And things that absolutely float your boat might not make sense to anybody else. I've been thinking a lot about this lately in my own life when it comes to rest and self-care, because I've realised that your kind of quintessential chilling out on the sofa rest and not doing much doesn't really do much for me. In fact, give me too much of it And I spiral downwards quite quickly. I get overwhelmed, and ironically, I can end up a lot more stressed than I was beforehand because I feel like I can't rest properly. And then my brain catches on, I start beating myself up, and it becomes this whole thing.

I've realized for me that there's definitely a sweet spot of the amount of time I can watch shit TV and it actually being relaxing This is the amount of time that it stops becoming helpful. And just to be really, really clear, this is not me hating on shit TV. I love shit TV. I truly, truly do. And this isn't me taking some kind of moral high ground of worthy rest and unworthy rest. None of that bullshit. This is just simply what works for me. So I know that if I want to feel rested, there will be a certain amount of shit TV involved, but generally speaking, I need to keep my brain stimulated.

I need to be doing a project, I need to be involving as many of the senses as possible, and if I try and force my brain to switch off, it does the exact opposite. I think one of the reasons I find reading so restorative is because it involves so much of my brain and I can't be mindlessly scrolling at the same time. Now, the reason I'm sharing this with you today is because I just wanna give you a permission slip and also a reminder that you tending to your own needs does not have to look like how anybody else tends to their own needs. In fact, the things that you do for self-care Or to fill your cup might be somebody else's idea of the worst nightmare, and that's okay. It is so easy to get lost in comparing ourselves to what other people do or the right way to do things, even if we're not consciously aware that we're doing it. And sometimes I think we just need the reminder that you just need to do you. And know that experimenting with what works for you is also going to be a huge part of the process, but it can also be an enjoyable one too. And this can apply to so many other things than self-care and rest.

It can also apply to how you like to celebrate the holidays, the way you work, and the way you solve problems, to name a few. Everybody and their pet ferret is going to have an opinion on how you do every single micro aspect of your life, but you are the expert on you, and you get to take what works, leave the rest, and flip a middle finger when you need to. I hope today's Daily Pep! has been the permission slip that you need. If you want more of the vulnerable, wonky, fun, behind-the-scenes ways that I'm building a life I love and sharing the helpful bits along the way, make sure that you're signed up to my email community because that's exactly what I do every Sunday with the weekly letter I send to my community. And a lot of people have said it's the one newsletter they really look forward to and enjoy opening, which is one of the biggest compliments I could receive.
