1001: The power of jelly-like containers
Today I’m sharing a helpful way to use structure to be more consistent without feeling trapped!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So this week here on the Daily Pep, we are celebrating reaching 1,000 episodes, and I'm diving into what I've learned along the way About what I'm calling rebellious consistency. Now we don't hear do you like the word consistency around here, especially when we really tend to value Flexibility, autonomy, and freedom. One of the key things I found to being consistent at something Is having some kind of container, having some kind of restraints, or firmish edges To keep you on track and to give you some structure. So how this works with the daily pep is that I know that Monday to Friday, A new episode needs to be up by 6 AM UK time. When I started out, I decided that I didn't wanna go over the kind of 8 minute mark, And I knew it had to be short and snappy. Now while having some rigidity doesn't sound like it would be rebellious, let alone flexible, It has brought a lot of freedom. I know the marks I need to meet.
I know what I need to do, and I know what I need to do by when. But apart from that, I've got an enormous scope. While there are definitely common themes, pretty much nothing is off the table to talk about. While there are definitely patterns with the episode, there's no one way of doing it. And that combination is just really helpful for getting it done. But here's the thing. You don't want the container to be made of really hard plastic that is rigid and unmovable because we will simply rebel and feel trapped. So I kinda see the container that I've built for the daily pep as a bit of a jelly mould Where there is freedom with what goes in the container, the edges are a bit wobbly.
They can be broken if I need to, for example, with the Reprise it's a job we're talking about later in the week, and it's a lot more free. I knew when I was starting out, I needed to have a daily deadline, And I needed to communicate that. I wanted people who listened to the daily pep to know that there would be an episode the next day at the same time. I knew I wouldn't break that commitment because I've made the expectation. And I know for me, I'm really good at breaking my Own deadlines if they're only reliant on me. But when it comes to external deadlines, they just really work, and I think there's definitely something in here About doing things in a way that works for you. If I hadn't made that kind of commitment, I know that I'd have probably been Uploading episodes at 10 PM every day so that it was every day, but not at a very convenient time. And I also know without the commitment, I would've just fallen off really quickly.
It would be something that I always intended to do, but life would just get in the way. So if you're struggling with consistency and want to add a bit of rebellion to the mix, think about how you can add a container. And another quick example, When I started the daily pep, I committed to doing it for 2 years. I gave myself permission to give up after 2 years if I wanted to, but I knew I had to give it a fair shot. And while that might seem extremely in 2 years, that's what felt really good to me. So whatever you're working on, whatever project you've got going on, Have a think about what your jelly like container could be. It could be a 30 day challenge. It could be breaking down A goal into 2 months at a time.
Just lean into what works for you and if you don't know what that is, Just go experiment, and you'll quickly find out what does and doesn't work for you. And one final thing before we wrap up today's episode. As we're talking about containers, I just wanted to invite you to a year long container I'm running this year called Your Rebellious Year. It's a group coaching program. It's designed to help you stay committed and connected to your creativity and to yourself throughout 2024, And to really practically help you, show up for the things that you most wanna do that often end up at the bottom of your list. We kick off this Saturday. It is gonna be an epic way of making significant progress this year as well as drowning out the voice of your inner dreamshitter.
I've also put the link in the show notes, and you can find out what it's all about there. It is crammed with value. We're gonna get so much shit done, And I've tried to keep the pricing as accessible as possible at £45 a month. So if you're curious about what is involved, Make sure to check it out as registration closes at the end of this week, and we get started on Saturday. Here's to doing things our own way. Here's to building up evidence that we can do things, and we do do things, and have a fabulous Tuesday. I'll see you tomorrow.
