1375: Hope is not some fluffy thing

We're kicking off Hope Week here on the Daily Pep! by remembering just how important hope is, and reclaiming it in a pessimistic world.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. To celebrate the launch of my summer Advent calendar, the Hope Revival. This week's episodes are all Hope related and my hope is that they help you feel seen and heard, remind you that there is good in the world, and they also feel like a hug in a mug to listen to. So around here, we are people who really give a shit. We are values driven, we are kind, we are compassionate, and we want to leave the world a brighter place than how we found it. And it often feels like we are swimming against the tide. You have some people in very powerful positions making some really, to put it mildly, fucking awful decisions. There is definitely a smell of apathy in the air.

And you also have those people who would call those of us who are really driven by our values and want to live in a brighter world, who might call us optimists and dreamers. And for today's episode, I just really want to rally against this idea that hope is a fluffy thing, that it's some pie in the sky idea, that it doesn't really matter, that it's a nice to have and it is just wishful thinking. I call serious, serious bullshit on that because we have seen so many of the good things happen in the world start with people who do have hope and do have a belief that the world can be different. Every single day, people's lives are drastically changed for the better by people who can see that there's another way, by people who haven't been beaten down by cynicism, and also everyday tiny little moments of human kindness and connection by everyday people all over the world. Now, I don't know about you, but that does not feel like some small feat. It doesn't sound fluffy. Rather, it sounds like not only the lifeblood of our societies and communities, but also a pretty simple baseline of how we could all be in the world. We all know that the tiniest things can make the biggest difference.

And if you're not feeling very hopeful lately or you're just feeling plain exhausted, know that you being you makes a difference in the world whether or not you can see it. Change happens in ripples. And many a time we can't see the ripples that we've started. But that doesn't mean they're not there. Hope is not some fluffy thing and we get to claim it as the important thing. It is whether or not other people agree with us or shame us for it. It can really suck when other people don't get us, but know that there is literally a whole world of us out there who do value hope, kindness and community and rebelliously hold on to what you know really matters. I'm going to round off every episode of the Daily Pep this week with a hopeful quote.

And I have found so many beautiful ones as I've been putting together the Hope revival. And one of the things I decided to do is that on every door you unlock, you also have a piece of inspiration for the day. And just collecting them and curating them in itself was so soul affirming, it may come as no surprise that today's quote comes from the one and only Dolly Parton. And she says, and she says, we can't just hope for a brighter day. We, we have to work for a brighter day. Love too often gets buried in a world of hurt and fear. And we have to work to dig. And we have to work to dig it out so we can share it with our family, our friends and our neighbours. So you keep doing, you keep going, my loves, and don't let the bastards grind you down.
