1552: It's time to get out of research phase

Around here, we're fiercely curious, and our dreamsh*tter loves research because it's so much less scary than doing the thing! So today's Daily Pep! is a jolt of encouragement to take the first imperfect step!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day and we are very nearly halfway through the week. So for today's episode, I thought I would share with you something that I have been needing to remember a lot lately. And I've got a feeling I'm not the only one. When it comes to new things or creative projects, we are both very conscientious. We want to do a good job, and we are also fiercely curious. And what that means is that sometimes we can get stuck in the research phase for slightly too long, and then the whole thing just gets even scarier. What I found is there tends to be a bit of a sweet spot where you know the next step and you're still excited, and your dream-shitter hasn't taken center stage yet.

I often find that if I linger after the sweet spot, I tend to start talking myself out of it. I convince myself I just need to do more research, and there is always more to learn, and there is always more research to be done. So this is my official reminder to both of us that we will learn what we need to along the way. As long as we are not self-teaching ourselves open heart surgery, which we shouldn't be anyway, chances are we can pick up the skills along the way. And often we really do learn so much more and also so much quicker by just doing the thing. So if you are finding yourself stalling, if you've moved past that sweet spot, and if your inner dreamshitter is cheering all of the research on, then now is the time to take some imperfect action. Chances are you already know enough, you can find out what you don't know when you need to, and it'll probably also be a lot easier to get going because you're actually enthusiastic while you're doing it and you've got the momentum, rather than having to talk yourself into it. You know enough, you can learn the rest on the way, and just be discerning for when research, becomes a helpful thing to hide behind because it feels more comfortable than starting.

Remember all the things that you've started before. Don't worry if you haven't finished them, that's not what we're talking about. Just lean into that first imperfect step and give yourself some forward momentum. And if you want to find out more about your own patterns and what might help you get started and what tends to make you stop, and you haven't already taken my Rebel Archetype Quiz, I think you're going to find it really helpful. And you can find your own rebel archetype as well as some very fun Dolly Parton gifts over at therebelrousers.com/quiz. I'll see you tomorrow.
