1623: What if you’re already enough? (Bear with me)
Today we have a thought experiment that might feel a little cheesy but we’re taking it from a different angle!
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. So today I want to pose a question to all of us and it is this. What if you actually are good enough just as you are now? I don't know about you, but my dream shitter has a field day with that one. And it is almost like I get this video montage of all the things I think I should have done by now, all the things I wish that were true. Which is why I want to pose it as a question rather than a statement and get curious about it. Because I want us to actually think about it as a question, as a bit of a thought exercise and just see what comes up. If that were true, or if there was a magic wand that suddenly made that statement true for you and you genuinely believed it, what would you do? And maybe even more interesting, what would you not do? And what would you stop doing? And maybe think about some of your friends for a second. They all have things that they want to do.
And yeah, there is a gap between where they are right now and where they want to be. But that doesn't mean that they are a shit human where they are right now. Chances are if they are a good friend, you love them exactly for who they are. Yes, you cheer on their dreams and their projects and their goals. You want that for them. But it doesn't mean they suddenly then become enough. And it doesn't mean that without completing those things that they are faulty. Yet rarely do we apply that thinking to ourselves.
And while I think there are so many good things that do come out of the personal development and self help industry, I think there is a hyper fixation on fixing everything, on optimizing everything and always having something to improve. And if we don't feel like we've got to a place where we can look in the mirror, look ourselves in the eye and tell ourselves we can love ourselves. We figure that we have not gone far enough and there's more work to be done. But I think there's something here we can really borrow from the body positivity movement. So the general idea is that it is not about going from I hate my body to I love my body in one fell swoop. Rather it is about body neutrality. So maybe being good enough for us looks more like that neutrality of actually I'm all right and maybe get into that place is fucking fun. Fabulous.
Because for many of us to consider ourselves alright, that is pretty fucking huge. Because the truth is that you are good enough as you are. No one is going to give us the official stamp of approval. And let's face it, around here, we'd probably rebel if they did. So we've got to find a way of giving that to ourselves. And we've also got to find a way of creating a really compassionate relationship with self improvement and personal development where we obviously do work on our dreams, our projects and our goals, but from a place of I'm alright rather than this is going to fix everything because neither of us are a problem to be fixed. So let that noodle around your brain today and keep coming back to that question. If you were good enough as you are right now, what would you do? And what wouldn't you do? I'll see you tomorrow.
