258: Reverse engineering what you want
Sometimes the gold can be found in the things we don't want. Today we're diving into how to find what you actually want.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. We are over halfway through the week, and if you need a reminder to just give things a go, you've come to the right place. Now, I am somebody who loves candles, preferably pumpkin scented or something really bright and colorful, but I love a good candle. Now, one of the candles I fancied for a while is one of those crackling candles. They're pretty big and they're purposely made to imitate the sound of a correcting fire. The wick is pretty big and they're pretty fucking fancy, so I decided to get one. I ran myself a really nice bath, and just as I was getting in the bath with a good book, I lit the candle, got in the bath, I led there for a good couple of minutes and realized it was really fucking annoying. The sound that I thought was going to be really soothing really just got under my skin and it wasn't long before I just blew it out.
And the reason I'm sharing this with you today is just a really friendly reminder that sometimes we don't know what we want until we get the things that we think we want. The fact is, often you don't know what you want until you try something. And sometimes the things you think you really want end up being the exact opposite. Now, this isn't me trying to shit all over your dreams. Rather, it is about really encouraging you to get curious about the things you want and give them a try before putting all your eggs in that basket. It's about experimenting. It's about leaning into that strong sense of curiosity that you naturally have. And it's about doing overthinking and planning.
It can be so easy to reduce this story to Meg bought a really shit candle. The end. But that would be completely ignoring the lessons that it has to give. And the lesson I ultimately want to share with you today is that when carving out, when building that creative, wholehearted, meaningful life that you dream of, it's so easy to think that all of the answers are going to lie in finding something that you really want, but often finding the things that you really don't want end up being more valuable. So today I invite you to reflect on the lessons that you've learned from your version of that really fucking annoying candle. And I invite you to get curious to see if there are actually any gems in there. So have a good day, have a good think, and I will happily be going back to my bog standard boring candles and loving them even more. See you tomorrow.
