496: No 'buts', no 'toos'
If you've ever thought you're too old, too young, or anything else, this one's for you.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Now, yesterday here on the Daily Pepper, we were diving into doing your own thing and how even if nobody around gets you or nobody around you is doing something similar, you are absolutely not alone. And today we are continuing with that theme by starting to explore some of the bullshit we lay down as a way to almost give us an out from the scary things that we really want to do. Now, if you have chatted to anybody about their dreams, there are two words that tend to come up pretty quickly and especially as women, as we are socialised to downplay any ambitions. Be really modest and play small. And those two words are but. And to. Now let me give you an example.
I would take my art more seriously, but I am too old. I want to start writing a book, but I'm too young and I wonder if people will take me seriously. I want to add my voice to my work more and really put it where it's valued. But I'm worried my thoughts are too out there and I will be laughed at. Now those are just three examples and I bet you can think of some more. And I bet you can add some more from your own head too. And I think there's quite a lot going on here. A, there is the fear of doing scary things and how our brain likes to keep us safe.
And B, there's all these preconceived ideas of what we can and what we can't do in any capacity in any age. And today I really want to cut through the bullshit and give you the truth as it is. You are not too old to start that thing. You are not too young to go for that thing. You are not too loud. You are not too quiet. You are not too bold. You are not too timid.
You are not too much of anything, my dear. And if you feel like you're too much, which many of us around here have been told, then let's fucking embrace being extra. I know I've mentioned the book before, but just the title of Barbara Sher's book, It’s Only Too Late If You Don't Start Now. It's is a huge motto for living life and there's so much wisdom in it because there are always going to be very valid reasons and also excuses and bullshit to keep you from doing what you truly want to do. Now, valid reasons are one thing. If you genuinely don't have the time, if you genuinely have too much in your plate and you know that adding something else would just be be really unkind to yourself, that's one thing. But if you're buying into all that about being too old, too loud, too young, too quiet, whatever the two is for you, then I say that shit and let's just go for it. You have a voice that the world needs.
You have this fabulous, unique combination of skills, strengths, experiences, memories, stories, perspectives that come together to form what I call your own epic shit. And nobody else in the world has them. And also, you happen to be alive right now. Think of all the random coincidences and things that have to happen for you to exist right now. And also be listening to this. That is pretty fucking amazing. So my rallying cry for today is, go take your pretty fucking amazing self and go do the thing already. Maybe you're not too much of anything and you're just right.
So in the most compassionate way possible, quit depriving the world of your fabulousness. Get out there already and go do your thing. Here's to you, my dear, exactly as you are. And here's to showing up for yourself, which you are doing right now. I'll see you tomorrow, and thank you for listening.
