Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. It is very almost Friday. You have nearly made it to the end of the week, and today I am pumping into your earphones or your speaker or wherever you're listening to remind you that it's okay to do things your own way. Around here, we tend to be pretty rebellious types, but we're also rebellious types who are very conscientious. And if you're anything like me, you have a weird relationship with authority. On one hand, fuck the system, yet on the other hand, the people pleaser in me, it's like, yeah, let me read all the rules and let's make sure I follow them, because I don't want to get anything wrong. But when it comes to life, there is no way really of getting it wrong. Everything's a bit of trial and error.
We try and learn from our mistakes and we have a lot more say in how we spend our lives than maybe we often realize. You get to choose how you show up for yourself. You get to choose how you show up for other people. We have a certain amount of say on how we spend our time or how we work or don't work. And we have some control over what kind of content we consume and what we do in our spare time, even if there's very little spare time. And the reason I bring this up is because you get a say in that there are a billion ways in which other people would have you live your life. We all know, through the very fact of being alive, that everybody else always has an opinion and there could always be more things you could be doing or things that you should be doing. But I just want to remind you that the one person that really, truly matters in all of this is you.
You get to decide what feels good to you. You get to identify your values and live in integrity with them. And you don't have to do things in the way that you're supposed to do them. Alongside my life motto, everything changes when you believe you matter is another one that I use in how we should all treat each other. And it's as simple as this. Don't be a dick. And in my view, as long as you're sticking to that one and you're living to your own moral code and treating people with compassion and kindness, then how you spend to use your time and live your life is really up to you. Other people will have an opinion, including people who we love and people that we are very close to.
There will also be a lot of unsolicited opinions in there, but you get to listen to yourself first. You get to do things your own way. And to go back to that Mary Oliver quote, you have one wild and precious life, and you get to use it as you see fit. So if you are battling the voice of your internal dream chitter or other people's unwelcome opinions, remember that the person who matters the most and the person who has the biggest stake in this is you. And that going by your intuition and what you feel is right is the right thing to do, whether or not it makes sense to other people. And you do not have to justify yourself. So that is my soapbox for today. Here's to doing things your own way.
And here's to having a bit of a complicated relationship with the idea of being a rebel and embracing the things that make you you. I'll see you tomorrow.
