                1101: Enter: gentle beast mode!

We’ve discussed before here on The Daily Pep! the idea of fluffy days, maintenance mode, and beast mode. But what if there was an extra, more compassionate option?

                Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. So quite a while ago on the daily pep, I was talking all about this idea of beast mode. Now, beast modes are those times where, for sometimes, no rhyme or reason, you have a day or you have a period of time where you are just getting so much shit done. What would usually take you so much longer is done with so much more ease, and you are just flying through your to do list. Now these beast mode days are tricky little fuckers because, a, they are fabulous. We feel like we are on fire. But the problem is it can lure us into this whole sense of believing that every single day could be like that. And while I would love that to be the case, beast modes just aren't sustainable.

So rather than enjoying them for what they are in the moment, we tend to wake up the next day expecting to get the same amount of shit done, and then we feel really shitty when we can't. We then tend to need a bit more of a fluffy day, which is kind of a day of recovery or a period of recovery where we give ourselves permission for not feeling like doing much, and we try to take the pressure off. Now for me, the most frustrating thing can be, going back to what we were talking about earlier, the fact that there is often no rhyme or reason as to why beast mode is activated. Sometimes we just wake up and we have a beast mode day, and it comes out of nowhere. But, also, I'm also very aware that sometimes life situations mean that we have to be in beast mode even when our tanks are empty, and that's what I really wanna dive into today. So if that is you right now, I really invite you to think about what I'm gonna call gentle beast mode. And it is getting shit done, but it is also with the awareness that there is too much on your plate and that unless you bring some gentleness into it, it's just gonna be cruel on yourself, and, also, you're more likely to reach burnout. I like to think of gentle beast mode as rather than pushing through no matter what the cost is, being more aware of what you're able to do, and working in fits and starts.

It's not just diving headfirst into your to do list, but rather it's working out what absolutely essentially has to get done and what would be the most efficient way of doing it. Essentially, it's the pause before the doing. It's knowing that as much as you'd like it to be otherwise, you do not have unlimited time and energy. And that when shit hits the fan, choices have to be made. It's also about putting some fluffy things in during that time to get you through. And knowing that if there is an option for you not just to have to push through, to take that one instead. So if you've got a shitload of things on your plate today, I really recommend taking the gentle beast mode approach. You will still get more done.

Chances are you might get even more done, but you're also honoring yourself at the same time. So take this one for a spin, see how it feels for you, and honor where you are energy wise right now. I'll see you tomorrow.

                1100:Let's start the week differently

Today we're kicking off the week in a rebellious fashion and looking at the week from a different angle!

                Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. A very happy Monday to you. So to kick off this week, we're gonna do it a bit different. Typically, when we think about a Monday, we think about all the shit that we have to do. When we look at our calendar, we're constantly adding things. We're adding things to our to do list. And a lot of the time, we start the week off feeling like we're already behind. So if that feels familiar to you, today, I'm gonna challenge us to do it a bit differently.

So rather than just looking at your to do list today, I want you to spend 5 minutes thinking about what you're not gonna do this week. What is actually not a priority? Are there any meetings or things that you can take off your calendar that just don't need to be there? Are there any tasks that are rolling on week after week that you just have to forgive and let go? And are there things that you have majorly over committed to that you need to politely decline? Mondays can feel like an intimidating beast as they are, let alone with all the stuff we add to the week. So even if this feels uncomfortable and maybe especially if this feels uncomfortable, have a look through your task list, have a look through your to do list, have a look through your calendar, have a look at all the things you've committed to, and prioritize. And also keep in mind that idea that I often find quite frustrating that for every yes you make, you're saying no to something else. And let's face it around here, one of the things that we tend to say no to the most is actually ourselves. So what are you not gonna do this week? And what are you gonna say no to? Remember that you do have limited time, energy, and capacity. Choices do have to be made, and it is certainly not selfish to take yourself into account regardless of whether you've been told otherwise.

Have a good one and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

                1099: Curiosity is your superpower

To wrap up the week, today’s episode is a permission slip to help weekend you approach things with a little more compassion.

                Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So to wrap up this week, I wanna pop in with a reminder that not everything has to be strategic and has to be super rational all the time. I think for us rebels and us creatives and multi passionates, we get a bad rap when it comes to starting new projects, and I think part of the bad rap comes from our own inner dream jitter. We all have internalized stuff to do with being flaky, chasing shiny objects, not finishing things, etcetera. And we forget all the things that we have finished and also that curiosity is our superpower. We tend to end up coming up with loads of quirky ways to get ourselves to finish things and be super strategic. And while I love a good flexible container and while I love a good structure, and I think they can be enormously freeing for us, Sometimes what we need is permission to go down the rabbit hole and just go and do whatever the fuck we want and chase that new shiny object. If we're always doing things when we're supposed to be doing them, we often rebel.

And the truth is that often, when we do things that we want to do, we get them done so much quicker because we actually wanna be doing it and we feel like it. And I know feelings don't come into the productivity debate much, which I think is a massive shame and is something I'm really trying to change. So if you need a permission slip this weekend to go start that random project, to just do what you fancy and follow your whimsy, This is your position slip. Go down the rabbit holes. Chase the shiny things. And be unapologetically you. See you on Monday, my darlings.

1092: An unconventional take on blooming

A lot of the time we associate blooming with things looking good on the outside, but today we’re diving into the more subtle side of what it means to bloom (and how to recognise it).

                          Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for yesterday's episode, I left on the quote that I love that I've shared quite a few times around here about how nothing in nature blooms all year long, so don't expect yourself to either. So for today's episode, I want to dig a bit deeper into that, specifically the part about what it means to bloom. It is so easy to think that the times in our life when we're blooming is when things are looking really good on the outside or we're going through some big change that is visible to everyone. But that's not necessarily the case. A lot of the changes and a lot of the blooming that we do is very internal, and it's also very slow, and that is part of the process. You're not doing anything wrong. But I think if we think of blooming only in the case of when the flower becomes bright and is at its most beautiful, what we can do is ignore some of the biggest transformations that actually happen along the way.

I'm a huge fan of celebrating what I call your intangible wins, because they are often some of the most important wins that we have. And intangible wins are the things that are never going to appear on your to do list and can be things like setting boundaries, your ability to deal with the situation and have hard conversations, that kind of thing. And I don't think any of us give ourselves enough credit for those intangible wins, nor do we often recognize them. So I just want to invite you today to think about what the different stages of blooming are for you and what it means to bloom in different areas of your life. Because that is going to look different for each of us. There is no right way of doing it. Some things take longer to bloom than others. Some things bloom more loudly, some things bloom more quietly.

But I bet if you looked for it, you could find an area in your life where you're blooming right now. Because we do not have one singular flower, we are made up of many, many different flowers and many different facets of our life. We are continual works in progress, and there is always something to celebrate. So here's to your intangible wins, here's to your many blooming flowers, and here's to remembering that everything changes when you believe you matter.

We’re kicking off the week with some compassionate strategy, and giving future us a well-earned break!

                              Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. I wanna kick off this week with a reminder that you don't have to solve everything this week. I think every week we get to Sunday or we get to Friday, and we pin so many hopes on our future self. It can be comforting to do that in the moment because it means present us doesn't have to deal with us. But it can often mean that future us, e. G. Monday us right now, feels a bit burdened and put upon. So if you're feeling like that, I really invite you to look at everything you need to do this week and actually see if you need to do it.

And, also, see if you can put in place some kind things for Tuesday you, Wednesday you, Thursday you, or Friday you. For many of us, our automatic response to our future selves is just to give her more work, is to give her more shit to do and more shit to think about. But I'm pretty damn sure that future you is gonna be grateful if you've planned something that they can actually enjoy, and there's not just one more thing to do. So that is some food for thought as you go about planning your week. Remember that you don't have to get it all done, that if it feels like a bare minimum week or a maintenance week, then by all means, just do what you have to do and do the bare minimum. And if you have woken up feeling full of beans, make sure you plan some rest time too. So happy Monday my dears. I hope this week provides you with lots of unexpected joy.

Treat yourself how you would treat a dear friend. And remember as always that everything changes when you believe you matter.
