1119: Hold 'em or fold 'em
Today we're turning to the words of Kenny Rogers to help us figure out whether to push through or surrender!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. So this week I've been running reprises on The Daily Pep. Because in all honesty, I've been a bit fucking exhausted. Now this is something I usually give myself a pretty hard time about. But this week, I've had a song stuck in my head and I think it couldn't be more relevant. And the song is The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. I'm a big fan of country music, and it's got these lyrics that you might recognise from a meme.
So this song is all about how to win at the game of life through the metaphor of a card game. And the lyrics I have had absolutely stuck in my head is, you gotta know when to hold them and know when to fold them. And I think this is really relevant for so many of us. And I know I was wrestling with that this week. I never intended to do a whole week full of reprises. But every day, as I sat down to record, I just did not have the energy. And it was that decision of, do I push through? So do I hold them? Or do I surrender and look after myself? So do I fold them? And I think there's gonna be different answers for different days and also different answers for your energy levels and also the type of task that it is. While I'm certainly not aiming for perfection here, I have a certain standard when it comes to the episodes.
And I knew that, a, I wouldn't do a great job, and, b, the amount of energy it would take me to psych myself up to do it then actually do it was just way more than I had. And it wouldn't have been fair on me to hold him or push through. So as we wrap up this week on The Daily Pep, I want you to think about any decisions you're making or reflect on your energy levels as you're heading into the weekend and think about whether you're gonna hold them or whether you're gonna fold them. Is it time to push through, or is it time to surrender? There is no right answer, and your answer might change each day, and that's okay. And know that while having limited energy is a right fucker, it's a human thing, not a moral failure. So whether you're holding or folding, have a good 1. I apologize if I've just given you a new earworm. And I look forward to new episodes of the daily pack next week. Have a good 1.
