Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day. Sometimes we struggle with a bit of motivation and inspiration during the middle of the week. And that is exactly for what today's episode is for. To give you a bit of a boost and to remind you the things that are true that you might not see. So today I want to talk a bit about evolving. Now if you see somebody every single day, you don't tend to notice the changes that might be really obvious if for example, you haven't seen them in a couple of years. That could include physical attributes.

It could include different strengths and different ways you're seeing them growing. But if you tend to see somebody every day, those things aren't really immediately obvious. And the same is true for ourselves. If we look at a picture of ourselves 10 years ago, we're probably gonna notice a lot of changes. But day to day, we don't tend to notice that much because we are so close to ourselves, and that counts for the ways we're growing as well. Change is often gradual, is often a lot slower than we'd like, but it doesn't mean it's not happening. We tend to see growth as this idea of having huge epiphanies. And if it was a graph, there'd be huge spikes.

But the reality is a lot different. But because we can't necessarily see the gradual growth, it can be really easy to believe that we're not growing. A fun way of looking at this could be to look at your life right now. Think about you from last year, and think about what doesn't feel so hard anymore. Think about the different things that you've done, the different skills that you've grown, and the different ways you're able to react to something differently. Personal growth is a bit of a funny fucker because it can feel like unless we are this future idealized version of ourselves, we're not doing it right. And along the way, we really do discount all of the huge things that have changed. Our brains have a built in negativity bias and a confirmation bias, so chances are, as you listen to this, all you can think about is the things that you said you'd do or wanted to do that you haven't.

But look at the things that weren't even on the plan that you've done. And for those things that you haven't done, think what the very easiest and simplest first step would be, and know that that takes a shitload of courage. If you think about somebody who really wants to learn to swim, when they've been swimming for 5 years and they are regularly beating their personal best, that is technically harder. But actually, the hardest thing is opening the door and getting in the pool that first time. So keep that in mind. Try and be a bit kinder to yourself today about what you have actually done. Know that you do have a shitload of courage and that you are growing even if you can't see it. Have a good hump day, I hope you find some unexpected joy. We are so close to Friday. And as always remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
