1316: An alternative way to start the day
Today is about meeting yourself where you're at, and starting your day being on your own team.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Last week, I had an absolute stinker of a cold, and I don't think anybody would have appreciated me recording a new episode. So it's lovely to be back. And I've just enjoyed a really chilled Easter weekend, and things are feeling good. And as I mentioned how I'm feeling, that is exactly what I wanna talk about today. Because something I've been thinking about lately is how much less friction and tension there would be in our lives if we could somehow accept or make peace with or tolerate how we feel rather than how we should feel.
Now don't get me wrong, and I wanna be really clear about this. This is not about being like, yay. I'm feeling shitty. What I'm trying to say is, what if every day rather than thinking about how you should feel, you just kinda woke up and thought, I'm tired today, and that's alright. Rather than, I'm tired today examining all the reasons why, all the reasons you shouldn't be tired, all the reasons you should be tired, trying to figure out how to make it a different way. I just can't help but feel that there might be a bit less resistance in our life. If we could get okay with how we're feeling on the day rather than the shoulds. Now I am a natural problem solver, and I find this really hard. I'm not trying to say this is easy. If I wake up and just feel a bit down, my immediate response rather than thinking, okay. I feel a bit down today. Let's meet myself where I'm at, is, okay. Why do I feel down? Should I feel down? How should I be feeling? And before I know it, I've gone off in a million different directions, all that require quite an enormous amount of energy from me, and that's before I've really done anything with my day. If on those days I did meet myself with more acceptance, I can't help but think that I'd be kinder to myself, and also I'd have a bit more energy too. And I think one of the ways we do this and make it regular is by practicing it.
So that is my challenge for you today. I want you to think as you listen to this how you're feeling and ask yourself what if you were okay with that. Or gently put your hand up to stop all of the different things that come up in terms of how you should be feeling and what you can do about it. And ultimately, it's about how can we be more compassionate to ourselves and slightly less analytical. Whether today you're feeling it or you're feeling shit, meet yourself where you are and maybe start with the question, what would today look like if I was actually kind to myself? And if that feels like too big of an ask, what would you say to a friend who felt like you feel right now? So that's my mini challenge for you today. I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
