1321: What are you inadvertently depriving yourself of?
Today we're making space for joy by diving into all or nothing thinking and challenging the stories we tell ourselves.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So something that trips up quite a few of us is falling into all or nothing thinking. And when we're people who have a lot of curiosities, a lot of passions, and a lot of things that we want to do, Sometimes we feel really constrained by our limited time and energy. And mixed with our all or nothing thinking, we tell ourselves that there's no point in starting something, or we tell ourselves that we'll get around to it someday, or the time just never comes. And today, I wanna challenge both me and you on that because I am definitely prone to all or nothing thinking. One of the stories that I tend to tell myself is that if I haven't got the time to finish a project, then I'm not going to start it in the first place. And that leads me to today's question, which is what are we inadvertently depriving ourselves of because we've created all these rules or these stories about the circumstance it needs to happen in. We all hear those quotes about starting small and a little bit of progress being a huge amount of progress over time.
And it is really easy to dismiss that because we hear it so often. But no matter how much we roll our eyes, it is kind of true. But often before we get to that tiny step, we need to address that story about it being worth starting anyway or worth continuing anyway, even if we don't have enough time or energy than we would like. I know for me as I sit here today recording this, I'm thinking about so many different projects I wanted to start that I talked myself out of because it wasn't the right timing or the setup wasn't ideal. And I can say hand on my heart, I wish I'd have fucking started them anyway. Not only because I'd have actually made significant progress and got somewhere with them, but also it would have brought me so much joy and brought some sparkle to my life as well. So for both of us today, my question is, in what way or in what ways are we depriving ourselves of joy because we're buying into all or nothing thinking or the circumstances aren't ideal? See what comes up for you. See what would look like an easy way to do that or start doing the thing. And you might just find you've got a bit more joy in your step. I hope you have a Tuesday as fabulous as you are, and you remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
