Today we’re fighting the urge to minimise our needs and dreams, and embracing the courage it takes to let ourselves want more.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you.

So to kick off this week on the Daily Pep, I wanted to give both you and me a reminder and a permission slip that I've got a feeling both of us might need. And it's this, You get to take up space. As humans, we all have wants, we have needs, we have desires. And so often, we dismiss those as frivolous, or we tell ourselves it would be selfish for us to seek out those things. It's so easy to dismiss those things as personal preferences that don't really matter, but they really, really do because it can be so hard to figure out what we want, say what we want, or set a necessary boundary. One of the things we tend to do is minimize those things and tell ourselves that they weren't very important in the first place. And I think you know as well as me that our dream shooter will back that up to the high heavens.

I get pretty sick of a lot of the advice out there about dream chasing that just simply tells you to go for it. With little to mainly no consideration to the fact that many of us live complicated and nuanced lives, we can't just kinda say fuck it and get up and go. And because it often is so much more complicated, what we can tend to do is play down the importance of our dreams in the first place or tell ourselves that it is somehow selfish or berate ourselves for not being grateful enough or for having dreams in the first place. So for today's daily pet, I simply want to remind you that it is okay to take up space and to have wants and dreams in the first place, even if they don't make sense to anybody else and even if you can't figure out how they're gonna happen. The how comes later, but firstly, we need to work on allowing ourselves to want things in the first place. I know for me, my dream shitter loves to get caught up in the practicality of things and the logistics, and I've often taught myself out of something about twenty seconds before I've realized I've even wanted it. But we get to stay in that space where we identify what we want even if we've got no fucking clue about how we'd go about it or it feels impossible. I think that identifying the wants and giving yourself permission to take up space and want them is a huge part of the process.

So today, I invite you to think about what random things have been coming up for you that feel like a want or a need. And ask yourself, if I gave myself permission to take up space or if I could put everybody else's ideas and wants of me to the side, what would that look like? And just live in the possibility for a bit. Know that this work takes courage. It can also bring up grief in terms of old dreams that maybe didn't work out or we didn't pursue. So treat yourself seriously gently and dare to take your needs, your wants and your desires seriously. Have fun dreaming and I'll see you tomorrow.
