1475: A December pep-talk
Chances are, the things you think you ‘should’ be doing right now, are the exact things your future self would be grateful if you didn’t do. That’s what we’re diving into on today’s episode.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So if you are listening to this in real time, it is the 1st of December and when the 1st of December comes along, things tend to get a bit funky. On the one hand, everything can feel quite festive and there's fairy lights everywhere and it can be lovely. But on the other hand, our dreamshitter can have an absolute field day. As we approach the end of the year, we can feel really fucking knackered with not much left in the tank yet. It can feel that there is so far yet to go. Not to mention all of the pressure, all of the peopling and sometimes the stress that can come with any holiday. So today I thought I would share with you what I most need to hear, because I think we all need to hear it and it is a healthy dose of realism.
So I figured we would reverse engineer a bit and look ahead to the end of the month. And I don't know about you, but I've never ever had a December where I get to the end of the month and I wish I'd worked harder. I wish I'd put more on my plate, I wish I'd said yes to more things, I wish I had tripled my workload and I wish I'd been even more of a people pleaser than normal. In fact, I'd say that I usually get to the end of December wishing for the exact opposite of those things. I always wish I had taken the pressure off what can be actually an arbitrary deadline, which is the end of the year. I wish I'd actually taken things off my plate, rested when I needed to. So by the time it came to any time off, it was actually rest I needed, not just hardcore recovery. And I always wish that I had gone with aiming for a C rather than an A triple star, because let's face it, and I'm sure many of us have been here before, this time of the year is supposed to be about getting cosy, about joy, about kindness.
And when I follow my dreamshitter's instructions, I just end up being really, really crabby and feeling really resentful and then it's no fun for anyone. So if you're waking up today thinking, oh fuck, it's December 1st, let's change the tone a bit into more of a oh fuck, we're nearly at the end of the year now is for coasting, not driving as fast as you can. And While you think December 31st year would be really grateful if you got all the things done, burnt out January 1st. You is not gonna thank you. So aim for a C. Let's aim for a cosy season, not a crabby season, and let's aim to not end the year completely and utterly burnt out. Have a good one. And I can't wait to see you for door number two of your Rebel Advent Calendar if you've joined that adventure, and if you fancy treating yourself to something a bit silly, a bit sassy, and also really helpful to help you keep grounded and less crabby this month, now is a perfect time to get the Rebel Rouses Digital Advent Calendar. It is a shitload of fun and you can find out more by going to the rebelrousers.com rebelchristmas and I think you might love it. See you soon.
