1535: Stop searching for the perfect banana
This one is for all of us perfectionists and overachievers (myself included!)
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you, and also a very happy National Banana Bread Day. And that's kind of what I want to talk to you about today. So when it comes to banana bread we know that it is a great use for those bananas that might be past their prime, that might be starting to look a bit minging, that might be slightly too sweet, slightly too bruised. But in this one scenario, they are what makes the whole thing shine. Now, when it comes to our lives and our creative projects, it's fair to say that for a lot of us who might be perfectionists and maybe even overachievers, when we are searching out the ingredients for things, we are looking for the equivalent of a perfect banana. And the perfect banana can also be something that is used within our lives or within our projects, or it can be the thing itself. But the problem with hunting for the perfect banana is that sometimes it takes precedence and completely overshadows what we were trying to do in the first place. It can easily turn the side quest into the main quest, and often we forget that it is absolutely not about the perfect banana.
That is not the point. That is not the thing that makes things shine. Or sometimes an imperfect banana, in the case of banana bread, makes all the difference. And elevates it to a new level, whether intentionally so or not. So often we wait for the right moment, even though logically we know that doesn't exist. We wait for the right thing, and we tell ourselves that everything has to line up before we start. But that is just our dreamshitter getting in the way, feeding you lies, trying to stop you from doing the scary thing. So my food for thought, quite literally today, is to think about things that maybe you thought were overripe or passed the date that could be used for a different purpose, and just have a bit of a gander at something that you maybe have previously discarded because it's not purpose that could absolutely be reclaimed.
I don't know about you, but I love makers markets and When I'm picking out something like a handmade mug, I always go for the one that is a bit more imperfect than the others because it's a bit quirky, it's got the human touch, and maybe we need to get more intentional about embracing that in ourselves. So happy Monday, have a good one, and if you're curious about working with your quirky brain rather than against it and you haven't taken my rebel archetype assessment— it is pretty fucking epic, and it's really helpful, uh, starting to learn what environments you do thrive in and maybe struggle in, what motivates you, what lights you up, and your own unique brand of imperfection. And you can go find your rebel archetype by going to therebelrousers.com/quiz, and I think you'll really enjoy it. See you tomorrow!
