1505: On not pushing through
To kick off this week, we’re giving ourselves grace, meeting ourselves where we’re at, and not pushing through for the sake of it.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So, like I'm sure many of you have done, I have welcomed in the new year feeling pretty under the weather. I was so excited to get back with brand new episodes of the Daily Pep last week, but it just wasn't happening. And I really want to take that as inspiration to kick us off for this week, because if there's something I think we could all do with more of, it is more grace towards ourselves. Because there are so many things that are outside of our control, and rather than seeing it for what it is, we reverse engineer, we kind of time travel and figure out all the ways that we could have stopped it from happening, while all the time forgetting that as much as we wish we could have, we do not have magical powers.
So, as you start this week, I invite you to meet yourself wherever you are at, rather than where you wish you were at. And I get that that can be frustrating and it can take a shitload of courage, but I know that you do have a shitload of courage. Very often we can only work with what we've got in the moment, but don't let that put you off doing anything at all.
For me, it was tempting to come back to the Daily Pep when my voice is completely better and I feel completely recovered, but I'm doing what I can with what I have right now, and that's actually making me feel a bit better now. Just to be clear, this is not about pushing through regardless of the circumstance. For example, last week I could not talk and I couldn't do much more than lie down and rest, and any pushing through would have been absolutely detrimental. So be honest about where you are right now. Give yourself extra grace if it is simply not a time for pushing through, and know that the minimum that you have to give, well, it might just be enough. One of the superpowers that we do have as creatives is, is that we are flexible, is that we are adaptable, and we can think of many different outcomes and ways of doing things, and that might be just what you need right now. Planning for the perfect time often sets us up to fail, and doing what we can with what we have often gets us further than we think. So here's to grace, here's to flexibility, and here's to not pushing through to our own detriment.
And on that note, I'll wrap this up, look after my voice, and I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow.
