1621: On doing the things you love
Today we’re leaving perfectionism at the door and diving into the things we love and how often we really do them.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. So today I have a question for you. When is the last time you did something that you say that you really love? Because here's something we know by now. Time tends to fly. Sometimes it feels like we just do not have enough of it. And weeks, months and years can go by where we are just busy. We are busy lifing. And we might not even realise it has been a fucking age since we did one of the things that we loved.
Or maybe we do realize that and the guilt creeps up on us and it becomes even harder. I want you to think right now of three things that really fill you up or bring you joy. Now remember, we are not looking for the three perfect things. Just pick the three that come up the first or you're most excited by. And I just want you to do a quick check in with each of them and think about when the last time you did them not did them perfectly. If, for example, like me, one of yours is collaging, it doesn't have to be a whole day of collaging. We are leaving the perfectionism at the door and we're just getting curious about when. Now, if you are regularly doing those things, this might be a great time to reflect on how you do it.
Whether you're conscious of it or not, or whether you can name what you do. You clearly have some kind of system and it might be really helpful to figure out what it is that works for you and really lean into that self knowledge so you can continue to do it and maybe bring it to other areas of your life. And if you just can't remember when you did the thing that you love, we are leaving any guilt, any shame at the door. And I just want you right now to think about when is the next time you could do that and when is the next time you could do the minimum viable version of that. Like the collage example. It's not about having hours to collage. Maybe instead it is about taking a really small piece of paper and just filling it. Or setting a timer for 20 minutes and just seeing what you come up with.
Because I am convinced that doing the things we love and tending to them is a great way of tending to ourselves. I know for me, creating is something that really lights me up. Although I often struggle with it and I am a much more pleasant person to be around. I have a lot more patience and I think I show up better in the world when I do create as opposed to when I convince myself I have to wait for the perfect conditions or I convince myself that a tiny amount of time is not enough and when my dreamshitter talks me out of it.
So get curious about your own process and if this episode has resonated with you, I've got two mini courses that really dive much more into this that I know you're gonna love. One is all about managing your time and energy from a realistic and compassionate perspective and actually incorporates real life shit such as chronic illness, caring responsibilities and the things we deal with day to day. And I've also got another mini course I love which is all about uncovering your creative process where you really dive into the things that work for you and how to work with your brain and continue to uncover some of the things that are already working that you might not have consciously identified. I've put the link for both of those in the show notes and you can also head over to therebelrousers.com/soloadventures and I truly hope this week you're able to make even a micro pocket of time to do something that you absolutely love. I'll see you tomorrow.
