167: The problem with positive vibes only

Having only positive vibes is both unsustainable and unrealistic. There’s nothing wrong with feeling a bit rubbish or a bit stressed, and that’s what we’re embracing in today’s episode!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Thursday. If you're sick of being your very own personal dreamshitter and would much rather be your very own personal rebel rouser, well, you've come to the right place now. One of the things that makes me mad is a trend that we've all been noticing quite a lot over the last couple of years, and that's this whole idea of positive vibes only. You don't have to go very far online before you find all of those stupid fucking quotes about being too blessed to be stressed or how today is the perfect day to choose to be happy or just to think positively and that'll get you through every situation. And for those of us around here, we're sick of the bullshit, we know life doesn't work like that. And the idea of having positive vibes only, well, that not only sounds massively unsustainable, but also I think it can be, it's not really great to ignore the more shitty emotions which all of us have. So today's daily pep is just about embracing when you feel a bit rubbish and knowing that's normal. We all have good days, crappy days, days that are average at best and just completely unremarkable.

And there is nothing wrong with that. But I think the problem comes when we try to pressure ourselves to be happy all the time, or we feel like we have to be grateful for every little thing in our lives when some of those things, well, they're not that great and no amount of positive vibes or gratitude are going to improve them. Because let's face it, there are some things in life which are just not ideal to say the least. And it's about doing the best you can and riding the storm. So if you are feeling all the pressure to have all the positive vibes, if you are frankly sick of it like I am, and feel like the odd one out because everybody else seems to be on this different wavelength that you just don't necessarily agree with. I just want to remind you that you're not alone. Not being able to keep up this energy of feeling positive and grateful all the time is not any kind of fault on your part. It's just we're not designed to be that way.

So today I just want to remind you it's okay to feel a bit rubbish, it's okay to feel flat, it's okay to feel exhausted, and it's okay to feel that myriad of other emotions outside of positive vibes. It makes you a human having very human experiences. And one of the worst things you can do when you're feeling shitty is beat yourself up for feeling shitty. So here's to embracing however you feel today. Here's to knowing that positive vibes only is not a sustainable way to live. And here's to accepting how you feel today with a shitload of self compassion. If you are sick of all the self help bullshit and you want a different alternative on building a creative life that you love. For the past six years I've been sending out Sunday emails where I really dive into bullshit free ways to show up unapologetically, live the only life you can live, and get really intentional about the kind of life you want and making it happy without all the fluff.

So if like me, you love personal development but minus all the bullshit, make sure you go and sign up. You can get in on them by going to thathummingbirdlife.com and clicking on Sunday emails and I can't wait to see you there. So have a good one. See you bright and early tomorrow morning. And remember, however you feel is however you feel and that's okay. See you then.
