168: Take a marathon approach
Building a wholehearted creative life you love takes patience, grit and stamina. Today we’re diving into how to take a marathon approach instead of sprinting, which often leads to burnout.
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. It's nearly the end of the day. We made it. And if you're feeling a bit exhausted, and if you're feeling just quite worn out, well, hopefully this episode is gonna help. So yesterday on the daily pep, I was sharing all of my many issues with the idea of having positive vibes only. And today, I wanna dive into something that I find really personally helpful. I know a lot of my clients find helpful, and it's this idea of approaching life as a marathon, not a sprint. Now I can easily get really caught up into the whole kind of rhetoric around you only live once.
And if I'm gonna be really honest with you, which I always am, that stresses me the fuck out. It feels like I'm being chased by a grandfather clock, and it just I don't even know where to begin. And I think there can be so much value with really looking and acknowledging how precious life is and really get an intention about what you wanna do with your time and what you want to leave with the world and how you wanna make the world a brighter place. But I think as well life can be long, and I know from a whole lot of experience that burnout is very real. While it can be tempting to approach life like a sprint, at some point, you're just gonna run out of steam. Like we were talking about yesterday about positive vibes only, it's just not sustainable and I think sustainability has to be a huge part of the conversation when it comes to building a wholehearted creative life that you love and that only you could live. And I think not only is it unsustainable, it's also pretty unrealistic especially at the moment when we're surrounded by so much uncertainty. I know so many of us are feeling so much more tired than normal and we're just not able to go at a a pace that maybe we're used to going at.
And not only is that okay, it's probably to be expected at this point. So my daily pet for you today is just to get curious about taking your foot off the gas pedal quite so hard. It's about looking at how you can get intentional about how you spend your time in a way that's sustainable and really fills you up for the long term. Now I know there are gonna be some people listen to this where that just doesn't feel realistic at the moment because they're putting out fires every which way they turn. And if that's you, if you can find even the smallest pockets of time to take for yourself, and I get that might feel particularly impossible right now, Try to. But if you are not fighting fires right now, think about how you can really start to approach life like a marathon. See how you can schedule in breaks. See what kind of fuel you need to keep yourself going.
Look at the kind of support you need and look at getting that support. And instead of giving a 100%, and let's face it, around here it's more like 310% to everything you do, What if you tried to give your equivalent of 70%? Because chances are your 70% is already fucking fantastic. So this weekend, remember that it's not a sprint. There is no gold medal of life and let's face it, there definitely is no gold medal if you're too burnt out to get to where you want to go. So take off your super speedy running shoes, get into something a bit more comfortable, and think about what a marathon approach would look like for you. I hope you have a fabulous weekend. I hope you get to take some time just for you. And if you miss a daily pep on the weekend, make sure you sign up to my Sunday emails where I share all the things I'm learning about all the tips and things that help build a wholehearted creative life that only you can live and all of the personal most vulnerable stuff that I just don't share anywhere else.
