228: You are not boring
We are all intrigued by the creative process of other people but so often we assume no one would be interest in our own process. Today I'm encouraging you to share your work and the things that inspire you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very, very happy Thursday to you. We're nearly at the weekend, and if you need a reminder that you matter and that your work is important and you need a bit of revorizing to keep going, well, today's episode is designed for you. So today I want to chat with you about something that I see coming out of my coaching clients and something that I think we tend to do as creatives. And it's this idea of seeing our work as not being particularly interesting, assuming that nobody would care about our behind the scenes or process or stopping ourselves when we start to talk about our creative work or our projects, because we assume other people will find it boring. And I say fuck that shit, because it is simply not true. I think when we are fully engrossed in our own process and our own work, it can be really hard to see how interesting it is to other people. I know I'm not alone in getting just so intrigued and curious about the process of other creatives. I love seeing people's sketchbooks. I love seeing people's studios, and I love all the inner workings of their thoughts and ideas that go behind projects.
We are all so fascinated by it. We love going down those rabbit holes. But something happens when we start to think about our own work. It's like we can't wrap our head around the fact that other people would feel the same about us. They would love to see our behind the scenes. They want to know the motivation and the inspiration behind projects. But because we're so in it, we just can't see that. So today I just want to give you a bit of boost and remind you that your creative work and your projects and you you are not boring. You are anything but boring. The fact that you are multifaceted and a complicated human being is often what lies and what makes you unique. And you bring stories, experiences, passions, interests, perspectives. You bring so many things to any project that is completely unique and the way in which you combine them. That is something only you can do. And that is something that, if you think about it, is pretty damn remarkable.
So today I want to remind you that your work is anything but boring. And also give you a book recommendation if you struggle with this stuff, which I know so many of us do. A book that has definitely been a game changer for me is Show Your Work by Austin Kleon. It's a book that I recommend to my coaching clients and it's all about really putting yourself out there, the fact that the world needs what you've got. And it also covers in a creative way a topic that I know a lot of us need to think about but don't like to think about, and that is self promotion. So go out there and share your work and share more of yourself while you're at it. Remember, my darling, you are not boring. You are anything but. We want to see your behind the scenes. We are all curious about it. And while it can feel really vulnerable, it can also give people a huge amount of permission to be created themselves. So talk about your projects, talk about your ideas and see what happens. See you tomorrow.
