Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. This Monday, we have a fabulous special episode as today's Daily Peppers is coming to us courtesy from the this phenomenal Austin Kleon. Austin describes himself as a writer who draws, and he is currently celebrating the ten year anniversary of his book, Steal Like an Artist. He is a huge role model for me.
I am so excited I got to chat with him. The full episode is now live on the daily pep sister podcast called courage makers. And during our conversation, I asked Austin what he would say if he had to give a pep talk, and I'm sharing his answer for today's episode. So I'll let Austin take it away.
“Think about what made you feel alive when you were, like, eight or nine or 10, and what does that energy feel like? And is there a way you can go about your work that way? Because one of the joys of becoming a parent for me is, you know, kids will suck your energy out and and ruin your life and, you know, take all your interrupt you and and take a lot of juice. But one of the real joys is you get to watch an unfettered raw creative being go about their business. And so I just think the most important thing I would say to people is genuine play. How can you make your work like play? Yeah. That's it. How do you make work like play? How do you make it the the the your hands in clay in kindergarten? You smell the Play Doh. You know? Or, like, how is it, like, gluing you get the glue on your fingers and you peel it off. You know? Just those memories of what it was like to be little and make little crafty things and play and run around and create things out of Legos. How can you get that spirit into your work? Because if you can really find that and how you can make that happen, you can show up every day, and it's no skin off your back, really.”
So that, my friends, is Austin Kleon. If you haven't checked out his fabulous work, please do. I've put more about him in the show notes. And we had a seriously good chat about owning your weirdness, why living a boring life can be a brilliant way to get work done, and also some great stuff about imposter syndrome and how we really show up to get the work done. You can listen to that on The Couragemakers, and I cannot wait to be back with you bright and early tomorrow morning.
