531: Rest does not need to be earned
Today's episode is a reminder that we can get far more done with self compassion than self criticism.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, daily peppers, and a very, very happy Tuesday to you. If you are just not feeling it or if you are being really hard on yourself this week, this is the episode for you. So one of the things I think it's fair to say nearly all of us struggle with around here is being really hard on ourselves, pushing ourselves slightly too hard, and feeling like we have to earn rest. Now I wanna start up by challenging that last one because rest is not transactional. Rest is not something you have to earn and you do not get to meet your own basic needs when you've earned a certain number of productivity points. What I mean by this is I know that I used to set myself certain rewards for doing things like, okay. I'll go out and take a walk when I've got x done. And while on one hand, that can feel motivating, on the other hand, that really is depriving me of something that I know is really good for mental health until I have earned it.
And that's just bullshit. You get to meet your basic needs regardless of what you've done or what you've accomplished or what you've quote earned and to suggest otherwise is really damn cruel to ourselves. So on that note, I just wanna remind you today that that as counterintuitive as it might sound, you do get more done with self kindness and self compassion than you do from self criticism and self flagellation. We've all had those times where we're sitting there making ourselves get work done and we are just too tired and we're not getting much done. And we know we would be much better off either coming back to it later or having a bit of a rest, but we deprive ourselves of that because our society is always about pushing through no matter what and how productivity is always king which it is not. So whatever you're working on at the moment, whatever you are struggling with, whatever you've got on your plate, I invite you to just think about what it would look like and what it would feel like to do it with more compassion. Chances are you would probably come to a resolution more quickly. Chances are it would feel better, and I think you might surprise yourself.
So that is your food for thought for today. Have a good one, and remember that you are not lazy no matter what your inner dream shitter would have you believe. I'll see you tomorrow.
