1111: There are flowers on the mountain

If like me, the fear of how hard the climb will be puts you off doing it in the first place, today I've got a different perspective (and an overextended metaphor!)

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So, yesterday on The Daily Pep, one of the things we were talking about was this idea that everything has to feel hard all the time. We were talking about how when things do feel easier than we thought they would, rather than enjoying it, we immediately try to find how we're doing it wrong because it simply couldn't be the case that it's not that hard. And today, I wanna take that a bit further, and I really wanna dive more into our goals and how we view them. As I'm embarking on a new chapter, I am tackling goals that I have had for years, and I have so many bullshit stories that I have created and believed about them. And one of them is is that anything worth doing and any big impactful change that you make has to involve absolute blood, sweat, and tears. For me, it almost has this Hollywood feeling of this epic narrative with all the music, and it is just gonna be proper shit. And I've used that so often as a way to not do the thing because the time never feels quite right to embark on something that big. It has felt like too much work, and I've doubted whether I could do it.

Or quite truthfully, I just couldn't be fucked. Now I'm not about to do a whole 180 and talk about how easy our goals are because that's not the truth either. But a huge part of the story that's missing is the fact that these journeys often come with so many unexpected joys. We talk so much about climbing this impossible mountain, but but we don't actually talk about the fact that we can stop along the way. We might actually have a really great picnic. The views might be fucking amazing, and we might come across the most beautiful, colourful flowers that we've ever seen. Rather, we tend to focus on how far we haven't come, how far we've got yet to go, how achy and tired our legs are, and how impossible it feels. Now this is not to go or toxic positivity on you.

This is not to take away from the fact that when we're climbing that mountain, it does feel like a beast, and our legs do proper hurt. Rather, it's a case that 2 things can be true at once. And I think we've spent so much time looking at one side of the mountain that we've completely ignored that the other one exists at all. So if you are embarking on a new goal, you're in the middle of something, and it feels really hard, or you've got this idea that you want to do or this life that you wanna live, but the mountain just seems too fucking big. See if you can find the winds and the beauty and the unexpected joys while climbing it rather than just what it's gonna take from you and then waiting until you reach the summit to have any kind of moment of relief, success, or enjoyment. I truly believe that our goals get to be enjoyable, not gruelling. And that might be a hard one to wrap our heads around because it is so countercultural to so much of the stuff that we hear. As I'm embarking on this new chapter, one of the biggest questions I'm asking myself is how can this be fun, and how can this be easy? And while that does feel like an uncomfortable question to grapple with, It's also one that I can get really creative with.

It's one that I can put my curiosity to work with, and I think it's a hell of a lot kinder as well. So that's something for you to think of as you go about the day. What are the really good bits of the mountain? What can you do to notice the beauty of the journey? And what can you do to make the climb more fun and easier? So that's it for today's Daily Pep. As we are approaching the halfway point of the year and this mountain that is 2024, if you want to stop and pause in a really supported and guided way to actually acknowledge your wins even if you don't think there are any and flexibly plan the rest of the year. That is exactly why I designed my halfway huddle workbook. It's a really good way to have a picnic on the side of the mountain, to rest your weary legs, to get your breath back and to get some motivation to move forward. And you can find out more by going to therebelrousers.com/halfwayhuddle. I hope you find some unexpected joy today, And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
