1352: A compassionate check-in

If you keep finding yourself at the bottom of your to-do-list, this one’s for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you, Bossy Meg is popping in on a hump day to making sure you're looking after your basic needs. So as you're listening to this, I want you to think, are you hydrated? Have you taken any meds you need to take? Are you hungry? And do you need to go eat something? And if the answer to any of those is yes, this is your loving reminder to go do the thing, press pause, come back, and we'll move on to part two. So part two is not necessarily the most fun one and is something that I know I really struggle with and I know it can be hard for many of us, and that is checking in with any appointments. Do you need to book a doctor's appointment? Do you need a blood test? Do you need to renew some meds? Do you need to reschedule therapy? Do you want to check in with a friend that you haven't checked in with for a while? Is there anything coming up that you've been meaning to cancel? And are there any pieces of bullshit boring admin that need to be tended to? Now, I know many of you listen as you're waking up in the morning, so I'm not going to go get you to do that right now, but simply set yourself a reminder for when would be a good time during this week to be prodded about it. For me, anything to do with booking appointments and anything to do with meds is one of my flavors of hard. So try not to judge yourself if these things feel tough because you're not alone. So press pause and go set yourself a reminder or schedule yourself an email for later. And then part three.

Have a look at your upcoming couple of weeks and see if you've got some connection and joy. Time. Do you have time with people you love or treasured? Time by yourself where you get to stop ticking everything off the list for a second and just get to connect with yourself, with others or with nature. And my helpful reminder here is that if you feel like it's impossible or you couldn't make the time or things are too busy, that makes this extra important because we most often need to take a break when we're least able to. So see when you can squeeze something in. And the reason I'm recording this today is because being a human can sometimes just feel fucking hard and there are so many things to do and often we come to the very bottom of our to do list or we simply forget because there's so much else to do. But you get to make yourself a priority. That is not selfish.

It is not self indulgent. It is very essential. Your needs are just as valid as anybody else's and sometimes we can get so caught up that we just forget our needs entirely. We can't remember the last time we ate. We've been meaning to book an appointment for months but it's just not happening. And that doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. That is nothing to feel shame about. It's just part and parcel of being a human in a busy and chaotic world.

So here's to looking inward and identifying your needs, seeing how you can meet them in an easy way that doesn't add to your plate and to putting connection and joy back on the table. I truly believe that everything changes when you believe you matter and tending to your own needs is a huge part of that equation. So go look after you. Give yourself the same grace that you would give a loved one and know your future self will be grateful. Happy hump day and I'll see you tomorrow.
