If you’re finding it hard to get started, or resistance is getting in your way, I’ve got a side quest for you this weekend!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. Around here, we are multi passionate and there is so much we want to do. There are so many skills we want to learn, there's so many rabbit holes you want to go down, there's so many projects we want to work on and sometimes getting down to doing them is so hard. It can be hard because of time, it can be hard because of energy, and sometimes it's hard because when we do have the time or we make the space, we don't even know where to start or the resistance is real. So I have a challenge for you this weekend and it involves going through a side door rather than the main door. Because here's the thing, when it comes to doing things that you've wanted to do for a long time, our dreamshitter tends to feed us a lot of bullshit thoughts. And we can have a lot of shame about why we didn't do it sooner and how further along we could be or how further along we should be. So it's no wonder that if you go from wanting to write a novel and beating yourself up about not doing it, sitting down at your computer or with a pen and paper might just feel really intimidating.

And you might get there and think, now what? Or say there's a particular type of food you've been wanting to cook. Doing your grocery shopping and making yourself cook seven new meals without a plan might feel really huge. So those are two examples of taking the main door. But I think we have to allow for inspiration and allow ourselves to feel it and actually get in the mood. With writing the novel, for example, that could be taking yourself out to a bookshop and just perusing all of the possibilities. Or it could look like rereading a childhood favourite and remembering your love of reading and why you want to do this in the first place. And it could also look like going on an artist date and looking at all the fabulous notebooks. I know whenever I'm trying to get back into art and creating things with my hands, the thing that inspires me the most and gets me making is watching videos of other people doing it.

That to me is a much better door to go through than getting all my stuff out. Feeling really overwhelmed, my dreamshitter takes over and what should have been a really nice time goes into something that I just feel really overwhelmed about. Let's say you want to up your cooking game and perhaps learn how to cook a potato particular cuisine. It sounds so simple and so obvious, but go and eat some. Go peruse some cookbooks and go remind yourself of why you wanted to do this in the first place. When it comes to all things creativity, so often I think we label the things that are really filling up our well and things that are getting us ready to do it as procrastination. And I don't think it's always helpful. And I think also we know the difference.

We tend to know deep down what is procrastination and fear of starting and what is actually a helpful way of getting ourselves excited and reinvigorated about the thing. So my challenge for you this weekend is to think about the side doors to fill your cup to get some inspiration, and you might just find that the thing that has felt really, really hard to start feels a whole lot easier and you might also get a bit excited. So here's to side doors, here's to finding inspiration, and here's to Also another really bloody good excuse to go peruse the book and art and notebook section of TK Maxx. Have a good one, and I look forward to seeing you in your inbox on Sunday or right back here on Monday. Take care.
