1364: In defence of rabbit holes

This one’s for you if you’ve ever felt or been called flaky. Let’s ditch the guilt around unfinished projects and rabbit holes, and celebrate being multi-passionate instead!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. Now, as multi passionates, we often go through phases. We get really into something for a set period of time and then maybe go off it. And it's fair to say that a lot of us do carry this weight with us of this fear of being flaky, the ghosts of projects past. We have a lot of feelings about our ability to finish things and follow through. And in the process, we inadvertently deprive ourselves of a lot of joy. I know for myself, I often get caught up in in the tangibles. I have to know that if I'm working on something that I intend to finish it.

There has to be a point to it. And it's almost like everything I do, I'm trying to set out to prove a point to myself that I can commit and I can follow through. So if you're anything like me and you can relate to any of this, today's episode is a rallying cry to let ourselves go down the rabbit holes and do the seemingly pointless shit and actually enjoy our creativity too. I know when I was a teenager, I would get lost in building beautiful rooms on the Sims, and I never gave myself a hard time for committing some time to doing something purely for the fun of it. Yet if I was to do that now, it would feel like a real challenge. And I just say, fuck that. We get to have fun too. We get to do the pointless shit. And not everything we do has to be tangible, measurable, or for a purpose. We get to have a Pinterest board dedicated to the most outrageous version of our dream house. We get to spend time going down rabbit holes of things that we've got no idea how we got into, we've got no idea how we're going to practically put it to use. But we're simply enjoying learning. And the irony of this is that if we can give ourselves that permission not just to do really practical things that have got a point or are going to move us forward, then we're probably also going to top ourselves up and find a lot more enthusiasm for the things that we do want to finish. By not depriving ourselves, we're likely going to find ourselves more motivated, more focused, and we might come across some real treasure along the way. The thing about creativity is that it is about going down rabbit holes. It is about starting things and moving on to something wildly different.

It is all part of the process. And if we lived in a world that saw it as part of the process rather than demonized it, I wonder where we would be. So that is my food for thought for you this weekend. Go do the apparently pointless stuff. Go enjoy yourself and know that in some weird way or another, it all feeds into each other. I hope you find some unexpected joy this weekend. Have a good one, and I look forward to seeing you on Sunday in your inbox if you're part of my email community. Or on Monday, right back here for a new episode of the Daily Pep. Take care.
