1381: In praise of sh*tty photos
For today's episode we're exploring the magic in the mundane, and the power of capturing the boring!
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. I shared a couple of weeks ago that we are preparing to set off for long term travel again and I've been thinking a lot about the lessons we've learned along the way and one of the things I've really grown to value is the shit Almost meaningless photos. Let me explain. So I am self confessed not a great photographer. I tend to snap and go and not really think too much about it. If it is a particularly pretty view I will take multiple photos. But generally when I scroll back through my camera roll a lot of things are wonky and there's also just a lot of random shit. And honestly it is the photos of random shit that I tend to value more than the really beautiful ones.
Because for me, photos are really about jogging my memory. As we've been getting ready to move from our lovely flattened leads, I've been taking pictures of the mundane views I see every day. They're not particularly attractive, they're not particularly well photographed, but prompts for things that I just don't want to forget and everyday moments. I'm not just taking pictures of the flat when it looks really nice, but also when it looks a massive mess because as I zoom in I can see things that remind us of different stuff we've done and just funny things. And I much prefer that and value that more than a highly curated photo that looks fabulous. It looks great but doesn't come with so much meaning. So my pep talk for you today is to take the shit photos, the boring photos, as a way of capturing your life right now and being able to look back on it exactly as it was and put yourself in that place and that time. Often it is so easy to only take photos when you're doing something out of the ordinary, when something looks particularly impressive or on special occasions.
But like most of us know the tiny moments, the boring moments, we often look back on them and they are the most magical and our life doesn't have to be this curated showreel all the highlights, but it can be the messy thing that it is and maybe that's where the beauty lies. So here's to recognizing the magical and the mundane, knowing that sometimes they're the same thing, and appreciating the everyday moments because those might be the things that you really want to look back on. Have a fabulous Tuesday and I'll see you tomorrow.
