1422: 3 questions to challenge your inner dreamsh*tter
If worry and catasrophising are your go-tos, today I'm sharing three questions to interrupt that train of thought!
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So this hump day, I want to pose a question to you that I've often asked myself. And it can be both frustrating at times and also incredibly liberating. And it is this. What if all the things you're worried about happening just didn't happen? When it comes to putting yourself out there in the world, what if all the critics that you imagine are going to appear simply didn't? Now I know life doesn't really work like this and I haven't just single handedly cured anxiety and my goodness, if I had a cure I would absolutely be sharing it. But I do think it is worth comparing the reality with the future that we have in our heads. I know when I started the daily prep, my dream shitter fed me with so many stories about all the things that were going to happen and none of them were great. But what I can also say is that five years later none of them came true.
And I am so fucking glad, to put it mildly, that I went for anyway, because at least I found out the reality rather than always trying to predict what was going to happen and never ultimately knowing. And I think there's a follow up question here that can be really helpful as well, which is what if the things that you're scared of, what if they did happen and you were able to cope with it? Okay, you might not have loved it, but you were able to deal with it. I think that is somewhere that we very rarely allow ourselves to get curious about and wonder about. But I think for all of us, we have all got through periods that we never would have believed that we would have if you described them to us. But often when push comes to shove, we are way more skilled and we are way more resourced and we are way more competent than we think. I know for me that I regret the things that I didn't try way more than the things that I did try that went a bit wonky. And while I absolutely roll my eyes about this next one and I completely forget about it in the moment, we can learn a hell of a lot from failure. So those are some things for you to noodle on today as you're thinking about things that you'd love to try, or things that you'd love to do, or things that you're nearly doing.
But it all feels a bit scary. And because I can't seem to stop asking questions today, one last question. What if actually you really are good at having your own back? I'll leave it there have a good one and see you tomorrow.
